Title: HEY K2!
Post by: Queen Bright on July 13, 2010, 03:14:06 AM
I need to fix my damn comma and other pauses problem. I either over-use them, don't put them the right places, or forget them. So you have a new student. Lucky you. ;D

Kay.

No google or cheating, though: Tell me, when do you use commas?

In lists when you have one or more item, or when you need to separate a sentence, usually a pause. And I THINK if I remember right, after certain words in a sentence like 'however.'

Basically. Yes, lists and pauses account for part of it. Appositives are basically non-essential parts of a sentence and are separated from the rest of the sentence via commas as well. For example:

The Great Gram Grape Jam Company, created by Richard Gram himself, was famous for making jam which came in eco-friendly containers.

In that sentence, the 'created by Richard Gram himself' part was not necessary for the sentence to make sense grammar-wise. The sentence would have been fine as the following:

The Great Gram Grape Jam Company was famous for making jam which came in eco-friendly containers.

For these non-essential parts of the sentence, we use commas.

Now, lets see if you can correct the comma mistakes in this post of yours. If not, that's fine, we'll work on it.

Lightning met flame, as the source of Hikaru's magic signature sizzled and faded out. A sphere of regular fire. She wasn't so stupid as to leave her magic signature, unsuppressed. And this mistake, would be the beginning of Mokai's downfall.

Wouldn't you put a comma between jam and which? For some reason I just see a pause there...

As for that sentence, I have no idea what  I did wrong.

No. While often we put commas at places where you pause, you can't think of it like that or you'll put commas all over the place. In the excerpt from your post I posted above, there should have been no commas. At all.

Try not thinking of it as putting commas wherever you need to pause, and you'll do a lot better.

Now, give me three sentences where you use commas cause it has un-necessary information in it, please.

Actually, you could yes put a comma there. That's a situation where it's more optional, and represents a longer pause in the way the dialogue is actually read.

And wouldn't you put a comma after yes? Since in that sentence you pause? If not...pausing is a problem for me. I type how I talk which results into this.

Yes, but you'd probably put a comma on could as well.
