Title: Rips
Post by: Queen Bright on September 03, 2010, 05:32:25 PM
Seriously people, does it have to be posted forum-wide in big bold red letters for you all to see? Rips are like the last thing we want. The OK? That was original, we were inspired by DBZ, but we didn't rip it. Then BK put rips in GE. (Star Wars, Stargate, Zelda, etc.) Now in SP, we've just recently this past year been able to get rid of them. Again, seriously. What do you even get out of ripping things off? There's no originality, it doesn't better you as an author or roleplayer, it's not your work. Because the game/show/anime/book was fun? Then write a fanfiction and mary-sue yourself in it, don't bring it to the RP and make the board as well as the ones that have original work, look bad. For a while, SP could almost say "WE'RE TOTALLY ORIGINAL!"
But now? Rips have been revealed none of staff even knew about.

There are differences between Derivations and Rips. And it's up to you to know the differences and hold back on ripping things off. Because you can't expect staff to know every book/game/movie/anime/etc is out there. Hell, Lyoko's things I've never even heard of, till I looked it all up. Now? The boy doesn't have an original damn idea in his head. We can't catch everything.

But again, where is the satisfaction in ripping things off and not getting caught? You're just proving how bad of an imagination you have, and how much of a thief you can be. I'd say leave it up to your own conscience, but if you see another member have a rip, try to tell us? Since again, we don't know every form of media out there.

If it copies a character or concept and idea exact, It is a rip.
If it copies a common name that everyone uses. It is not a rip.
If it copies an uncommon name that you've only seen one place, and that place has no copyright. It doesn't matter, it's still well known and, Is a rip.
If it copies an exact plot and conclusion, It is a rip,
If it's inspiration from a plot or story, and you've changed a few aspects and have your own original conclusion, It is not a rip.
If it's a plot or idea that's been done to hell and back, it's not a rip, but hey, it's cliche, overused, and you're left up to your own choice whether to do that or not.
If it copies powers exact (Like Jutsu, Super Saiyan, Heart of the Cards, Force, seriously... I shouldn't need to list these,) known to only that franchise, Guess what? It's a rip.
If it stems off popular mythology (That's based IRL NOT AN AUTHORS (Lovecraft*cough*) or other things we know of IRL, It is not a rip.
If it derives, thus, again, inspiration off something, but doesn't copy it in exactness, names, etc. It's not a rip.

Others work is others work, sure it may be entertaining. But if you rip it for something original (This rp,) and don't get caught? You're just showing how big of a damn loser you really are.

What about Agent G? He was inspired by Sam Fisher. They are far from the same people, and don't have similar plots at all. They're both quiet, but spectacular agents. I didn't make him with the intention of him being Sam Fisher, but Sam Fisher inspired his kind of character.

Is he a rip?

That's a Derivation/Inspiration.
Ex, You make a character that lost both his parents to a bad guy that wants him dead, but he's special in some way? Are we ripping Harry Potter? No. Maybe some inspiration... more than anything, I'd say just cliche.
You make a character that survived the death of his parents and an attempt on his own life, is a wizard, goes to wizard school, and has a lightning bolt scar somewhere. ...RIP.
You make a character that survived the death of his parents, somehow connected to magic,  and might be special. Derivation.

This is a quote from a "Ask Orson Scott Card," book on writing. In it he has a whole chapter on Derivation, Influence, Plagerism, etc. But for this, here's what he has on derivation.

Quote from: Ask Orson Scott Card, Writing book by OSC
Any idea you really like that absolutely works for your story is your idea, no matter who else might have used it before. The only limitation on this is what the audience will stand for - if you end your novel with the hero standing before a fire and the only way the ring gets thrown in is because someone else bites off his finger and then falls in, well, your audience is likely to be a bit disgusted - the resemblance is too close, the source way too well-known.
