First lesson. Tactical analysis. Tell me, what, in your opinion, is the meaning of tactics?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Planning ahead and being strategic to beat your opponent and find ways of beating their attacks?

Yes and no. A tactic is a technique or plan for victory in battle including elements such as espionage, magic, technology, etc. To start things off, tell me, what tactic was your character trying to use in the sample post?

No idea.

The Celestial Fire, what was the point of using it?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Beat the stupid Unholy fire, because I had forgot what beats that.
And to create a close to equal enough fire to defeat the godfire.

So, it was a tactic. Trying to get a tactical advantage. What's a tactical advantage?

I don't want to look at the damn definition.
JUST TEACH ME TO BATTLE BETTER, GOD DAMMIT.

Fine, first thing is first. Pick the opponent on the board you think is the strongest and tell me why.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Orph, then you.
Orph because he has a better imagination when it comes to attacks and how to style them, and finds ways to make sure he doesn't get beat.
You'd be second because you have creative attacks...but yours can be beat easier, and sometimes hardly make sense.

Then you need to be able to be on the same level of posts. What's the strongest character you can think of?

From strongest to least...
Koty, Abel, The Demi-idiots, Your group, ...etc.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Lets skip Koty for obvious reasons.
What's Abel's tactical advantage?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

That arm.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 02:30:57 AM
That's a start. Alright, so he has multiple powers and stuff, and knowledge. So, here's what I want you to do. Make up a spell (give it a name if you want) that prevents his arm from being used.

Try something not as physically destructive.

Shield to not get hit/touched?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 02:46:56 AM
Okay, that's one way.

Now, in a battle, the goal is to kill the enemy or render him unable to battle. Continuing the Abel example, how would you do that?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 02:47:40 AM
Spell Circles?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 02:55:05 AM
So, you trap him and try to drain his energy. He locks his energy so it can't be drained. There's always a counter to a counter, and that's where tactical advantages come in handy. Having the upper hand and disabling how the other one fights. Backing him into a corner so he can't counter your counter.. For instance, this is how I would do it:

1. Post with an attack which somehow makes contact with him physically (maybe I touch him with a hand glowing blue). This spell prevents his ability to lock energies inside him.

2. Ten posts later when hes forgotten about that blue hand I do the spell circle thing and drain the energy.

The point is, be ten steps ahead at all times and always have a plan. Never give your enemy the upper-hand.

Alright, so try again with a different example on how to kill Orph, only go more in dept and consider possible counters and eliminate them. Obviously you won't get all the counters, but eliminating some is enough.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 03:06:58 AM
That's the problem. I can sit here and think up thousands of ways to kill him. How they work, how they would be made to work, implementation and the steps of them to make them work? No idea.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 03:09:01 AM
Alright, the first step is examining what kind of combat you're going to be using. Magical combat, obviously, is used against Abel. Would you want to use more long-range spells or short-range against Abel?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 03:09:47 AM
Long-range?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 03:10:11 AM
Long-range?
Why?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 03:10:47 AM
No clue.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 03:13:50 AM
No clue.
Alright, well, if you're closer to Abel, it's easier for him to grab you with that arm. So, you want to use more long-range spells if possible. What we're going to do is work on your spell creating abilities, and beyond the spells. How to use them and where.. SO, this is your scenario: You're in the Outerverse with Abel. He wants to claim the Outerverse for the Archive. He's coming near you with his arm. What do you do?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Jump back and throw up a shield....Dodge and defend.
Offensive? Not sure. After dodging is where I get stuck...

Well, this is where we have a number of options with your Phoenix abilities (specialization) and the lay of the land. Spellbooks also come in handy at this point in time. Think of a fire-based attack.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 06:03:49 PM
The next lesson is specialization. Each and every character has combat they are best suited at, magic they specialize in, ship functions they're best at operating, and so on. This can be a fundamental part of combat. For instance, your character is best specialized in fire and phoenix magic. So, before we get started, I need you to implement fire in each of your spells you gave me for the items.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 07:03:17 PM
It's not only Fire attacks...that would seriously be limiting my character in a bad way.

And I can't think of how to apply fire to any of those anyways.
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: K2 on January 18, 2010, 07:20:05 PM
Well then, what does your character specialize in?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...
Post by: Queen Bright on January 18, 2010, 08:45:59 PM
What? Fire for the preference, but it's not like that's the ONLY magic she uses...
Spell circles, rituals, whatever falls under basic magic?
Title: Re: Let's get this over with...

Specialization
Having a greater understanding of any subject of information will allow you to use this information more thoroughly in battle. It is important not to limit yourself. This applies both in and out of specialization. While there are many weaknesses in specialization, if done right, it will assure victory in battle. Specialization is a good tactic for battle.

If you go overboard, you'll turn out like the Anrufe. Take Chaos for example. He almost always limits himself to fire in battle, and fire-based attacks, while he is perfectly capable of using other attacks. Fire is what he is strengthened in. The problem is, if you focus too much on one subject, someone with water will easily win against Chaos.

Not specializing also can be disastrous. Hawkeye seems to have grasped this fact and tries to overcome it with ideas such as Negion Magic, though he needs to work on WHAT he specializes in. Someone with basic magic going up against Rogue, someone with Corruption Magic, will easily be defeated. If someone who does not specialize in any spells goes up against someone who is an expert in a certain kind of magic, they will often find themselves easily outmatched.

So, the trick is finding the balance. We don't want you to be too specialized in a certain field of magic, to the point you rely on it. But we also want your character to have enough understanding in a certain kind of magic so that they can defeat another person who is specialized in another kind of magic. As I said before, your character seems most fit with fire, in addition to spell circles and vials/potions. So, your character would be very good against someone who specializes in Jikore or someone with Earth abilities.

You've got to learn to use the things you specialize against more than just those types. Against the types that would likely be strong against whatever you specialize in. You've naturally got better talent at this, because you've got more than one thing you specialize in.. I'm not telling you to make your character only use fire. I'm telling you to learn how to use fire against others who normally wouldn't be effected by fire. Take water for example.

How would you use fire against water?

Sure.

Now, it's time to get our hands a bit dirty. Give me a sample post with fighting in it.

Er.....now we come to metal block number 2.

I can post an attack in reply to one of yours, or another persons. But posting an attack to start a battle, set up, or intro a topic of a battle....
I  have no idea where to start or how to word one. I can't do intro posts...only replies.

Quote
"Dleihs!" Hikaru threw out her hands, a small barrier of normal fire formed to stop the web and hopefully incinerate it. Once that happened, the fire began to shape it's self into the form of a sphere. "Alright, so your powers are webs? Then I'd say it's time to turn up the heat a bit."
She laughed, as the sphere of fire started to become hotter and hotter, the heat radiating throughout the area as she put more energy of fire into it. It would be unbearable to anyone that didn't have a natural immunity to fire. "Since you've enclosed us into this area, the heat should over-take the oxygen and cause it to pretty soon become hard to breathe."
-------
"Heh, I was hoping you'd do that..." Hikaru laughed. "My sphere here, isn't just for show..." She stated, as it started to light with gold flames of holy fire, getting much much hotter before. She threw it up above her.
The sphere burst into smaller shards and thin threads of holy fire, they began to wrap around the walls, ceiling, good, and swords, holding it in place. Each thread of fire connected to a shard of fire and connected to each other into it's own web of flame, enclosing them into a smaller space, the size of a very small closet.

"I've now enclosed your area off from my own area. Except this area, the fire can't be broken. With the air cutting off, the heat becoming hotter by the second, I don't believe you can stand it. But incase you can..." Hikaru flicked her hand, more threads of fire shot out from every shard of fire, straight at him.

------
Hikaru watched as her own threads wrapped around the oncoming threads.
"Did I forget to mention that this spell isn't a low level area changer like you and your group use? In fact it's a very advanced spell. My threads of fire here isn't just controlled by my powers, they're alive with demonic spirits of their own. Can't you feel it? They will defend me as well as attack you. It's the perfect defense and offense."

The threads began to pulse as if in response. "Also... they don't burn... They absorb...." Anfira insane glint could be seen in her eyes. "They absorb spirit energy, of whatever energy signature they first latched onto. Ever since they blocked your web, the first move as a defense, they latched onto your power signature, and will not stop until that power dies or until I dispel the attack."
---------
"Grr, looks like I'll have to end this sooner then I thought then..there's one last thing my threads here do, and one little thing you overlooked." Hikaru grinned as she touched one of the threads.
"Noitsubmoc!" Each thread started to ignite small balls of fire which travelled along each thread, almost like a fuse, till all the balls of fire met, causing a very large explosion that would wipe out both enclosed areas.

Wow... that last one, godmodding to the max. Should of worded it better....it sounds bad.

To be perfectly honest, I'd say that you've already got an intermediate level of magic-using.. In fact, I don't know why you weren't put in advanced battle. Of course, you have no idea how to battle in a ship. So, this is what I'm going to do. Demote you down to Basic Level. Take no offense in any of this, but you're not ready for intermediate battle yet.

I disagree, she cannot move on to advanced battle classes until she can first initiate an attack without the need for something to go off of.

I realize that, which is why I've demoted her to basic. Part of the reason, anyway. Literacy is more of the place to work on what she speaks of, though I will work with her on this too.

I'd just like to point out the difference between strategy and tactics real quick, if it's ok K2. If not, feel free to delete this post.

Strategy is the pre-combat planning based on the layout of the battlefield, available resources, enemy positions, numbers and morale, and other such intel. Strategy is used to plan traps and ambushes in a attempt to gain the advantage very early on.

Tactics are changes to the strategy that are made during battle based on altered conditions of troop  morale, unexpected reinforcements, inaccurate intel, etc. These are reactions to changes, rather than actual planning. Most magic battles are based on tactics rather than strategy.
