Premises 1: Reason is the essence of 'Human'
Premises 2: Hawkeye does not use reason.
Conclusion: Therefore Hawkeye is not human.
....Then what is he?
God, I love Philosophy.
-
I rofl'd
-
And on the topic of Hawkeye... I just realized who he and his characters talk like. William Shakespeare (Not in the sense of writing, but in their diction)
-
I need to work on that. Honestly, thanks for pointing that out Lyoko.
-
No one caught my purposeful mistake... oh well.
The mistake was that actually, essence of human is the ABILITY to use Reason. Whether they use it or not is their own choice and doesn't affect it. But let's try this one... We did this one in class for Animals but eh...
To think is to communicate through the ability of reason.
Hawkeye does not communicate through reason.
Therefore Hawkeye does not think!
The one from class was,
Animals do not communicate through reason.
Therefore animals do not think.
But it works!
-
Actually, animals do in fact communicate through reason. Thus animal think.
-
No they don't. -.- And if I have to go over EVERYTHING I've learned in class to prove it, I will.
-
We THINK they don't, but to be honest, I've seen otherwise. My cat's actually unlocked the bathroom door and opened it just to beg me for a drink from the sink.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/earth/wildlife/5983953/Aesops-fable-is-true-shows-crow-study.html
Crows have shown deductive reasoning and problem solving skills. Unless you view reason as indescribable ability that for no real reason humans only have, check.
Premises 1: Hubris is the essence of 'Human'
Premises 2: Hawkeye displays hubris.
Conclusion: Therefore Hawkeye *is* human.

I said they didn't have reason, I didn't say they weren't intelligent.. They can't hold a conversation and question the meaning of something like we're doing. They can't decide whether something is right or wrong, good or bad. They have instincts that make them think something is bad or good, but it's not the same as reasoning on it like we do.
And your argument is not sound until you prove each of the premises (Rational Presuppositionalism: Understanding the less basic in light of the more basic) It's been proven that Reason is the very essence of human in what we mean as essence, and its been proven that animals do not communicate through that essence or possess it, therefore what I posted was a sound argument. Yours at the moment, is not.
-
If its a matter of instinct, then honestly there is nothing that makes humanity capable of thinking in the manner you described.
Reason is not and never will be part of what is human. What makes humanity "human". Is the ability to be in such denial that we can believe that we are "special". That ability can be called at its most basic "Hubris".

While it is a joke, one CAN construe the start of the topic as bullying.
I'd rather the specific train of discussion about declaring Hawk sub-human be discontinued.
EDIT: Not to be an ogre, just wanna point out we DO have rules that we really oughta follow.

If hawkeye isn't human what is he?
A hawk's eye. They don't use reason either 8D
