Title: Black Market Tech
Post by: @Pokemon Master Red on March 13, 2010, 12:48:08 AM
Before I actually request any tech, I have a proposition.  Hear me out on this; there isn't any applied-for tech in this post per-say, but I'll need a approval on this from everybody before I request anything.

I want to be in charge of the Black Market.

What I want to do is use my second planet to make a neutral 'Black Market' Space Station, which will sell tech approved in this thread/other Black Market threads.(and on the note of Planets, Elmora still hasn't benn added...seriously...;_;)
Now, unless Im wrong, the Appluad/Smite system has no real use yet. However, I would like to implement that as the new 'currency system' for the Black Market, which will be explained IC that they dont accept the 'normal' currency blah blah being the reason you cant just buy everything unreasonably. The system is quite simple, actually:Just take you Appluads, and subtract the amount of Smites, which gives you the Net balence you have to spend for all your characters. Each transaction would have to be approved by a admin, who would deduct the total amount of Appluads used from the Appluad counter via Admin control, then leave a post conerning the transaction's approval. The Smite counter is left alone, obviously. This gives everyone a reason to strive to be better RP-Wise/generally behavior, as more Appluads gives you more 'currency' to spend for the powerful-and expensive-tech at the Black Market.

I have a few ideas for tech, but without this first approved, they're useless, so...Yeah. I know there might be potential ways to exploit the system, and a few bugs in it, but its not perfect, and Im open to suggestions for ways it could be improved.
So, Yay or Nay?

I say no, because the applauds and smites are from OOC, not IC. Also, I can just smite you allot, so you won't have any profit.

The whole thing about them being OOC is kinda the point; otherwise, a RPer could claim infinate amounts of cash to build up a army's worth of super-tech. This, at least, gives a bit of a way to counteract that.
And I know; again, its not a perfect system, which is why I'll be happy to take suggestions to improve it.

I think what he means is that the OOC idea isn't applicable IC, as you're using currency that doesn't exist IC to affect what the characters have IC.

Yeah, I get that. Its just, this gives a reason for people to try to get + rather than -, ya know?
Plus, its the only way I can think of for keeping track of this; I understand its a OOC thingy, buuuuut by doing this, there's a way of keeping track of that stuff. Its like how in some forums, they use the post count instead, except, y'know, fair-er. Since this could be deducted easier.

We experimented with making the credits (GE-Universal-Currency as of the year 2042) currency work in this game as a monitoring system for power, planets, economy, etc.. He may be on to something here.

You can't stop others from smiting you. That's the problem.

Well, if there is any other system that could be used(like that credits thingy K2 mentioned), I'd be happy to know of it.

I like the post count, because usually, allot of posts means that you are active allot.

Yeah, but it could also mean you spam a lot. Active=/=good all the time.

Spamming would lead to punishment, and removal of the spam posts, which would decrease the post count on the spammer.

Eh, Im still a bit wary. Wait, you can or you cant decrease a post count from the Admin CP? If you can, then it would work, I guess.

Remove the ability to gain posts from Tech, Empire, Character, and the General sections. Then you can only gain posts IC.

Using post count is unfair. It's bias against the ones that have less characters.
Of course you're going to post more, if you have more characters, they're all in different locations normally.

Personally, I vote against an economy system. It will make the board even more systemized and locked.
Having to pay for ships, weapon, and crap? That's turning it into a game, last I checked it was a play-by-post RP not a PBBG.

I was never for anything like having to pay for everything, just the black Market stuff I'll be applying for. And the point was never to make it completely gained IC, because that way everyone would be able to get something. The reason I was thinking along the lines of the Applaud/Smite system was to encourage people to make better posts, which would earn them applauds, rather than to make bad posts, which people would likely Smite 'em for. But as its been said, that wouldn't work as well. So, if this is to work, there needs to be a system that will work out for this. Which is what we're trying to figure out. I think.

If I deleted one of your posts, your post count would automatically go down by one. I can manually set the number of posts as well. But to be honest, I don't really like this plan. It's very biased. If someone runs a criminal syndicate, yet doesn't have much posts, then the person wouldn't be able to get things from the black market. That wouldn't make much sense, really. It's also biased against new players.

So...Would there be any other system that would work?

Oh we could code a system ourselves, but I don't believe anyone currently on the board has that sort of knowledge regarding SMF, or PHP for that matter.
