Kinda thought the whole "princess corronation" thing was a big enough hint.

What is with the whole "princess" thing in equestria? Celestia should be a Queen/Fuhrur or the other royals should be like lords/ladies... Their regal system confuses the Hell out of me.

Faust said it was for simplification purposes. Like Prince Blueblood and Princess Cadence who are Celestia's niece and nephew, she said would technically be Duchess/Duke and wouldn't be her immediate niece/newphew but some removed far off relative. However because it's a show for kids they simplified it to just Prince/Princess Niece/Nephew. Otherwise, since Celestia has only one sibling, Luna would be the mother, lol.
But Faust said Blue Blood would be faaaaaar removed.
As for why Celestia and Luna aren't queens.. Hasbro took over this one and pointed out that most queens in Disney and kids cartoons have been shown as evil and the princesses good. So even if Celestia and Luna should be queens, because queens are bad (Chrysalis) they're forever stuck as princesses.
...And yeah the coronation thing said it. But it was finally confirmed and not just speculation with this. And from this article we can probably assume that Princess/Alicorn is more of something earned and not just in the family. Even though technically Twilight is royalty due to her brother marrying Cadence.
ALSO as the article says, they're making their own mythology with princesses.
