(Beg your pardon, the questions may be a little out of order.)
"Mr. Stein?"
A young man of 21 was sitting on one side of a table in an empty room, dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans attire. Monroe, coming in with a questioned look on his face, made eye contact with the young man before speaking to him.
"That?s me. Who are you?"
"Mr. Stein, my name is John, and I?m here to interview you. It's a pleasure to meet you." The young man held out his hand and shook Monroe?s firmly for three seconds, no more. John had to shake his hand a little after Monroe broke the handshake, the pressure Monroe put on the simple greeting hurt his hand.
"What is this interview about?" Monroe asked, not understanding why he had to come down to a bleak and desolate room on such a short notice.
"The interview is just to get to know you better, Mr. Stein. Please have a seat sir; this may take a little while." The young man spoke simply, showing Monroe the seat across from him at the table. John took a seat as he watched Monroe take his. There was no paper in front of John, mainly because this interview was going to be conducted strictly from memory.
"Let's start with getting to know you better. Tell me a little bit about yourself, where you're from and what you do." John?s question was straight-forward, but noticed that the question was met by a slight yawn by Monroe. Monroe didn't hide the fact that he was bored, but John waited as Monroe answered his question.
"Well, my name is Monroe Stein, I?m 39 years old and I'm an attorney. My specialty is criminal law, and I practice by being a defense attorney for people who are possibly facing prison terms." John watched as Monroe answered, his answers were truthful but the man clearly did not want to be here. Shifting gears slightly, John questioned Monroe further.
"Alright, tell me about your family. What was yours like growing up? Do you have a family now?"
"I was raised by my father until I was about eighteen. I don't have a family of my own because my career is what I want to focus on now." Monroe's answer was a little more stern than usual, and John was unsure if he wanted to press on with that line of questioning. Keeping himself focused, John went onto his next question.
"So, what would you-"
Noticing as what seemed to be a fire ball just up and jumped to one side of the room, both John and Monroe jumped back from their respective sides of the tables, both men making sure to stay low before making sure the fire ball was out of sight.
"Huh, wonder if they?d arrest him for that?"
Looking over at Monroe with a sort of dumb-founded look, John couldn't help but wonder if this guy was sort a sort of one track mind when it came to being a lawyer. Watching as Monroe picked himself up and dusted himself off, John got back to asking him his questions.
"Well, putting that aside, what would you say your goals are?"
"Goals?" Monroe seemingly resisted the urge to laugh as John stood there, wondering what he was meaning. "Kid, I don?t have any real goals. Sure, I?d like to become a more experienced attorney, but in the end, what more is there to become than someone who lives well for themselves?"
"Uhh...nothing?"
"Precisely. There's not much more to life than that." And with that answer, Monroe took his seat again across from where John?s seat was. Realizing that he still needed to go through a few more questions, John took his seat across from Monroe and kept going with his interview.
"Well, Mr. Stein, our time together is becoming shorter. I'm going to need you to empty your pockets and put whatever is in them on the table."
Monroe let out a small sigh and reached into his pants pocket, fumbling around for a few seconds before pulling out a communication device. John waited for Monroe to finish emptying his pockets, but to his surprise, Monroe didn't move his hands back to his pockets to grab more things.
"Uhh...is that it?" John couldn't help but ask, he figured he would carry more with him than just that device.
"Well kid, since you clearly have never been in a position like mine, I'll let it slide and explain it once. When you are in a position like mine, where most of the work I do involves interacting with clients, I have to be able to get in contact with them at all times and vice versa." Monroe's answer was to the point, almost condescending to John.
"I get that, Mr. Stein, but you don't have anything else on you right now? Any sort of keepsake or something that holds value to you?" John was still confused; his own creation was beginning to baffle him.
"This is the only thing I need right now." It was another simple answer from Monroe, who merely took his communication device back and put it back into his pocket. There was silence in the air for a few seconds before their table seemed to spontaneously combust. Getting into safety mode, Monroe pushed back slightly in his seat before merely kicking the table away from him.
John, unfortunately, was the only one standing between the table and the wall. Pushing up from his seat, John barely managed to avoid the table, being checked in the hip before fully moving away from it. Scared that he had caught fire, John immediately took off his pants and threw them away from his body, leaving him clad in his T-shirt and green boxer shorts.
"Well...uhh...a few more questions and we should be okay. First off, what do you think of me?" The question came a little nervously, but it wasn't met with hostility by Monroe. Instead, John seemed to notice more of an air of honesty around him before he was given an answer.
"Not much, kid. You seem kind of goofy, like you're not all there, but otherwise you seem kind of boring. But enough about me, what would you do if you were me in my situation?"
This was a curve-ball question for John, considering that the person asking him had just insulted him not five seconds prior. Still, John couldn't help but try to think of an answer for the man.
"Well, if I was you, I'd spend less time trying to be a lawyer and more time trying to make a connection with someone. A friend, romantic interest, it doesn't really matter. You seem like you're cut off from others, so I'd try to reach out and be someone who's interesting outside of their job."
This was met by a few more seconds of silence as both guys watched the table burn up. Thankfully, nothing else in the room seemed to be catching fire, but it was still alarming to see the table burning as intently as it was.
"Not bad, I guess." That was the only answer given by Monroe, and really the only one that was needed. John couldn't really tell if Monroe was going to take it to heart or if he was just going to let it slide, but he was glad that he got through to Monroe on that front.
