Roleplaying 101 / Re: Q and A: Hikaru

"Well, alright then..."

John sat in silence for a moment, his hands held together and his eyes darting around the room.  Hikaru was definitely not the type to open up easily, and she seemed reluctant to let anything slip passed a guard she had up seemingly all the time.  Standing from his chair, John decided on one last thing he could possibly do.

"...well, sorry for wasting your time then.  It was nice talking to you while it lasted, though..."  And with this, John held out his hand to Hikaru, hoping she'd take it for at least a very brief shake.

"Yeah, I am.  And quite honestly, I'm not thoroughly understood on magic either.  I'm not in a field where magic is a primary concern, unless it directly coincides with matters at hand.  But the way I see it, if somebody is going to use magic as a weapon, it's going to have the same drawbacks as a weapon.  Besides, why try to harm a guy like me, who could potentially get someone like that out of a tight situation?"

This young woman was beginning to make no sense to Monroe.  Despite the fact that she was kinda cute at first, she was obviously cutting it close to being full-on crazy.

"Getting off the topic of magic, why come over here to talk to me?  Out of all the others you could have gone to, you picked me.  Why?"

"Who would you say your closest friend is?"

John was now more curious than ever to find out more about Hikaru.  She didn't seem to have strong ties to her family, so maybe there was someone out there who was at least attempting to keep her sane.

"Existence, huh?  It seems a little unrealistic, to take over everything that exists.  But regardless, it's not my place to step up and fight back against such people or things.  I'm may not be the best fighter, but I believe that if any one of these people tried to come out and take over my existence, that they would have to bring more than just their intentions to do so.  What I'd do exactly...well, depends on the situation I'm in at the exact moment."

Monroe sat back in his seat, let out a deep sigh as he looked down at Regina's clip board.  "That's a good drawing though."

"Well...alright.  I guess we could move on to the next question then..."

John believed he was making progress with some of these questions, which lead to him plunging into a question about Hikaru's brother.

"Do you still see any of your brothers?  Even K2323?"

"Well, my clients are sometimes wealthy enough to provide me with transportation to certain places when the need arises.  Otherwise, I try to settle into different places every once in a while so I can network with different people and see different places.  And if I may ask, what did you mean by completely out of the loop?"

Jumping from his chair again, John stayed standing even after the flames settled down around Hikaru.  Despite his fear that the next question might just kill him, John felt he had to ask it anyways.

"Where does your hatred for technology users come from?"

"I'm originally from earth, specifically the old U.S. of A.  It's a bit of a hostile planet, but growing up was alright for me.  I'm just glad I'm out of there now, that I get to travel to different places."

"Heh...right..."

John was becoming more and more nervous by the second, this girl was obviously not in the mood to even be here now.  Clearing his throat, John continued to his next question.

"Well, Hikaru, it's obvious that you're very skilled with your abilities.  Do you like having these abilities?"

"Well, I'd either try to defend myself or I'd run.  Any instance of me fighting back would put me in front of a hearing committee, and I'd probably get my license to practice law revoked.  Losing my ability to practice law is not worth attacking somebody else."  This time, Monroe seemed a little more curious than before.  Monroe looked her over once more, trying to figure out what her possible motives might be for her questions.

"Well, Hikaru, I'll try to make this brief since I get the feeling that you're sick of being asked so many questions.  You can take a seat if you like; I'll be sitting here regardless."

John, standing in his t-shirt and green boxers, takes a seat set up across from another now empty seat.  Sitting with his legs slightly parted, John tried to make eye contact with Hikaru, but decided not to at the last minute.

"Uhh, Hikaru...would you say you have a...uhh...short temper?"

Taking a seat across from Regina and watching as she crossed her legs in front of him, Monroe couldn't help but be amused at how formal and direct she was being with him.  Smiling, but not exposing his teeth, Monroe spoke to Regina casually, more so than he would with John.

"Well, Regina, I'm at a point in my life where I don't really aspire to much aside from what I have right now.  I have a good job with a more than modest income, and I live well for myself.  I don't think there's much more to aspire to than to keep what I already have for myself.  Do you mind if I call you Regina?"

Characterization / Re: Let's Make A Character!
« on: July 06, 2011, 01:05:17 PM »
(Beg your pardon, the questions may be a little out of order.)

"Mr. Stein?"

A young man of 21 was sitting on one side of a table in an empty room, dressed in a simple T-shirt and jeans attire.  Monroe, coming in with a questioned look on his face, made eye contact with the young man before speaking to him.

"That?s me.  Who are you?"

"Mr. Stein, my name is John, and I?m here to interview you.  It's a pleasure to meet you."  The young man held out his hand and shook Monroe?s firmly for three seconds, no more.  John had to shake his hand a little after Monroe broke the handshake, the pressure Monroe put on the simple greeting hurt his hand.

"What is this interview about?"  Monroe asked, not understanding why he had to come down to a bleak and desolate room on such a short notice.

"The interview is just to get to know you better, Mr. Stein.  Please have a seat sir; this may take a little while."  The young man spoke simply, showing Monroe the seat across from him at the table.  John took a seat as he watched Monroe take his.  There was no paper in front of John, mainly because this interview was going to be conducted strictly from memory.

"Let's start with getting to know you better.  Tell me a little bit about yourself, where you're from and what you do."  John?s question was straight-forward, but noticed that the question was met by a slight yawn by Monroe.  Monroe didn't hide the fact that he was bored, but John waited as Monroe answered his question.

"Well, my name is Monroe Stein, I?m 39 years old and I'm an attorney.  My specialty is criminal law, and I practice by being a defense attorney for people who are possibly facing prison terms."  John watched as Monroe answered, his answers were truthful but the man clearly did not want to be here.  Shifting gears slightly, John questioned Monroe further.

"Alright, tell me about your family.  What was yours like growing up?  Do you have a family now?"

"I was raised by my father until I was about eighteen.  I don't have a family of my own because my career is what I want to focus on now."  Monroe's answer was a little more stern than usual, and John was unsure if he wanted to press on with that line of questioning.  Keeping himself focused, John went onto his next question.

"So, what would you-"

Noticing as what seemed to be a fire ball just up and jumped to one side of the room, both John and Monroe jumped back from their respective sides of the tables, both men making sure to stay low before making sure the fire ball was out of sight.

"Huh, wonder if they?d arrest him for that?"

Looking over at Monroe with a sort of dumb-founded look, John couldn't help but wonder if this guy was sort a sort of one track mind when it came to being a lawyer.  Watching as Monroe picked himself up and dusted himself off, John got back to asking him his questions.

"Well, putting that aside, what would you say your goals are?"

"Goals?"  Monroe seemingly resisted the urge to laugh as John stood there, wondering what he was meaning.  "Kid, I don?t have any real goals.  Sure, I?d like to become a more experienced attorney, but in the end, what more is there to become than someone who lives well for themselves?"

"Uhh...nothing?"

"Precisely.  There's not much more to life than that."   And with that answer, Monroe took his seat again across from where John?s seat was.  Realizing that he still needed to go through a few more questions, John took his seat across from Monroe and kept going with his interview.

"Well, Mr. Stein, our time together is becoming shorter.  I'm going to need you to empty your pockets and put whatever is in them on the table."

Monroe let out a small sigh and reached into his pants pocket, fumbling around for a few seconds before pulling out a communication device.  John waited for Monroe to finish emptying his pockets, but to his surprise, Monroe didn't move his hands back to his pockets to grab more things.

"Uhh...is that it?"  John couldn't help but ask, he figured he would carry more with him than just that device.

"Well kid, since you clearly have never been in a position like mine, I'll let it slide and explain it once.  When you are in a position like mine, where most of the work I do involves interacting with clients, I have to be able to get in contact with them at all times and vice versa."  Monroe's answer was to the point, almost condescending to John.

"I get that, Mr. Stein, but you don't have anything else on you right now?  Any sort of keepsake or something that holds value to you?"  John was still confused; his own creation was beginning to baffle him.

"This is the only thing I need right now."  It was another simple answer from Monroe, who merely took his communication device back and put it back into his pocket.  There was silence in the air for a few seconds before their table seemed to spontaneously combust.  Getting into safety mode, Monroe pushed back slightly in his seat before merely kicking the table away from him.

John, unfortunately, was the only one standing between the table and the wall.  Pushing up from his seat, John barely managed to avoid the table, being checked in the hip before fully moving away from it.  Scared that he had caught fire, John immediately took off his pants and threw them away from his body, leaving him clad in his T-shirt and green boxer shorts.

"Well...uhh...a few more questions and we should be okay.  First off, what do you think of me?"  The question came a little nervously, but it wasn't met with hostility by Monroe.  Instead, John seemed to notice more of an air of honesty around him before he was given an answer.

"Not much, kid.  You seem kind of goofy, like you're not all there, but otherwise you seem kind of boring.  But enough about me, what would you do if you were me in my situation?"

This was a curve-ball question for John, considering that the person asking him had just insulted him not five seconds prior.  Still, John couldn't help but try to think of an answer for the man.

"Well, if I was you, I'd spend less time trying to be a lawyer and more time trying to make a connection with someone.  A friend, romantic interest, it doesn't really matter.  You seem like you're cut off from others, so I'd try to reach out and be someone who's interesting outside of their job."

This was met by a few more seconds of silence as both guys watched the table burn up.  Thankfully, nothing else in the room seemed to be catching fire, but it was still alarming to see the table burning as intently as it was.

"Not bad, I guess."  That was the only answer given by Monroe, and really the only one that was needed.  John couldn't really tell if Monroe was going to take it to heart or if he was just going to let it slide, but he was glad that he got through to Monroe on that front.

(Hope you guys don't mind, but I want in too.)

Name: Monroe J. Stein

Age: 39

Race: Human

Gender: Male

Backstory: Monroe was born to a father who was up to his eyeballs in debt to gangsters and a mother who seemed to vanish before he could ever know her.  Growing up as the child to a single father, Monroe?s relationship with his father was loving, but strained because of his affiliation with these gangsters.  Monroe grew up with a relatively normal childhood up until his father passed away from medical complications.  With the father?s debt still unpaid, these gangsters forced his father?s debt upon Monroe.  Running out of options, Monroe used up the money he inherited as well as whatever else he had and sent himself to law school.  Having graduated law school and after becoming a practicing lawyer, Monroe was forced to go into work for these gangsters.  Monroe represented these criminals for a number of years and made a good sum of money for helping to keep these guys out of prison.  Eventually, his debt was paid off, and Monroe took off the second he heard.  Now, Monroe acts as a Criminal Defense Attorney for anybody who is willing to pay the right price for his services.

-----------

"Let me ask you a question."  Monroe spoke, sitting across from a man he met called Forger.  Monroe slid back in his chair and stood from where he was once seated, now looking down at Forger.  Loosening his tie a little bit, Monroe kept his eyes on Forger as he made his way over to the side of the table.  "You chose to become a member of this site because you liked what you saw, correct?"

"That's right."  Forger nodded in response to Monroe, whose presence seemed almost larger than life.

"But this board you chose is almost all action-oriented.  Characters are often times combat-capable people who align themselves to empires in order to expand the territory they already have.  You're not an action-oriented role player, are you?"  Monroe stood still when asking this question, watching Forger's response intently.

"Not really, no."  Forger was confused, but decided to answer Monroe's questions to the best of his ability.  Forger watched as Monroe paced back to his side of the table, looking him in the eye as he asked his next question.

"Then why come here in the first place?  And why choose to use a character who isn't combat-oriented?"  The question was possibly a little too blunt, but it was a question that Monroe needed an answer to.

"Well, I was hoping to bring a little bit more to the board than just a typical "universe in combative struggle" scenario."  Forger's answer was a little reluctant, but honest as he could be.

Pausing for a second to think of his next question, Monroe's eyebrows narrowed slightly as he stood on his side of the table.  "So, you want to completely over-haul this place and make it more of your own?  Sounds a little selfish, if you ask me..."

Forger became a little flustered, but tried to explain himself to Monroe.  "That's not what I meant.  I meant that sometimes, through these combative situations, a lot of things can become a little too cut and dry.  I figured that if I chose a different approach to a place like this, that some perspective can be added to why these conflicts are so important."

Monroe continued with his questioning.  "So, Forger, you think that these struggles aren't important and that everybody here is just wanting to fight each other just because they can?"

Forger shook his head, and took a deep breath before answering this question.  "I guess...I guess I just wanted to try something different here, that's all."

Monroe nodded, sitting back down in his seat and pulling himself back towards his desk.  "Alright, that's about all I have to ask for now.  Anything else we need to cover?"

"I'll look into it, but that would probably take a little bit of time.  In the meantime, make sure the office is occupied by someone you trust at all times, and nobody comes in unless they are authorized to be there.  In the meantime, get back to your campaign and keep working.  I'll be in contact shortly, and if you need anything in the meantime just call me."

And with that, Monroe's first leg of business of establishing himself in his client's case.  Everything else at this point was just a matter of concentration and patience, because eventually this incident would reach some kind of settlement.  Giving himself a mental pat on the back, Monroe looked over to the rest of the office (which was being shuffled around) before looking back at his client.

"Do you have anything to eat here?  I'm kind of hungry at the moment."

"No cease fire document should be issued.  Not at this time, anyways.  Right now, we just need to get your documents to a safe location outside of this office, and you need to get back to your campaigning.  I want you to show the public that, despite these incidents, that you are addressing them in a calm and orderly manner.  And with that, I think it's best we part ways.  You have my number, just call me whenever you need my services."

Dusting himself off and straightening his tie, Monroe let out a confident breath before remembering something.

"Actually, something just occurred to me.  Do you know if Eric Mann has ever served time in the military or any other kind of government service?"

"Good day."

Monroe merely nodded with a smile, unwavering from his previous gestures, as Eric Mann exited the premises.  Even as Eric left both of their presence, Monroe's smile was unwavering.  Turning back to his client, Monroe couldn't help but speak bluntly.

"Well, Eric seems to be a very tough and confident individual.  Either he will let his confidence betray him and screw up, or he'll come to his senses and do the right thing...whatever he thinks that is."

"Oh, well, allow me to introduce myself then."

Monroe, dusting off his suit, reached into his pocket for another slip he used for his contact information.  Examining Eric up close, it was easy to see why some people would seem intimidated by him.  Eric seemed to carry himself with a lot of strength, something a man of the armed forces would usually do.  Monroe knew better than to operate socially on first assumptions, but Eric had managed to distinguish himself from a lot of other people rather quickly.

"Monroe Stein, I've been hired by Lustre here to represent him regarding his illegal detention by none other than the Zarenthian Hand.  I've advised my client not to speak to you personally, but if you're willing to let your men contact me, I'm sure we can set up a meeting to discuss these matters...diplomatically, of course."

"Well, since you faced this problem not once but twice, I think it would be in their best interests to back away from you for now.  In that case, we need to get some information from their offices as quickly and quietly as possible, something that can link them to these bugs.  Don't you worry about the legal aspect, just let me worry about that for now.  Alright, this is my number, I want you to call me if something new develops.  In the meantime, I suggest you relocate any and all important documents into a new office unti-"

Monroe, noticing his interruption, immediately stood up and looked at the person who had decided to make his way over.

"I'm sorry, is your business with this man more urgent than mine?"

The recording was tricky, but it provided Monroe with a certain understanding of the mood between both of these conflicting parties.  Taking the recording and sliding it into his suit pocket, Monroe looked back up at his client.

"Alright, do you know the name of the arresting officer or officers?  We might have to look into them later."

"Forget about the hand for a second, and think about this.  You're involved in a senate campaign, your office is going to at least some locations known just in case somebody needs to get in touch with you.  Is there anybody inside the campaign staff that you have been having problems with?"
