Toxic Gas began to enter the atmosphere of the planet and if it worked it would kill the inhabitants of the planet. This was a way to kill them. It was not a take-over but rather a killing. A genocide of everyone on the planet actually.
The gas would reform no matter what was done to it if even a single piece of the gas had been missed at all.
