Memory Dowloading Replay Alteration Picturing (Mem_Pic)
An intelligence gathering device which takes the memories of an individual and replays said memories. The memories are altered ever so slightly in the subconscious so that the target does not realize the memories are being altered. This is used to gain intelligence. It is a rather controversial type of intellegence gathering tactics, and the long term effects it can have on a target are unknown. Sort of kept secret, the Zarethian Hand neither confirms or denies the use of such a machine on prisoners, leading much of the Zarethian media to speculation.

Zarethians... Dont have prison. There are holding cells for those about to be processed but there is no prison to be sent to. Look at the Dossier.

This is more for use of those in the holding cell. Major theats, usually foreign.

How does it work? Even if you altered memories, they're of the spirit they can't be forgotten or erased completely. You alter it, the true memories would still be there whether or not repressed or sealed.

Its not trying to repress the memories, it's trying to make the person relive altered versions of the memories without realizing it's been altered, as to gain information. Very similar to the movie Inception, only with memories, and used more for actual intel gathering. For example, if Lustre had a meeting with Ezra in his past, the Hand could change what Ezra is saying without Lustre realizing it, so they can get info out of him.

It can also search deep and surface memories that have been imprinted in the spirit, though this requires a lot more time, and is a lot harder to alter.

Is it altering the actual memory though? Or is it altering a copy? Because actual memories couldn't be altered.

It's not being permanently altered, it's the projection which is altered. The memory is extracted and reprojected, with altercations, into the brain so its like a new experience. The target will believe they are experiencing the altered memory for the first time.
