The sun stabbed everything it shown upon, summer being on the offense in full force. Temperatures skyrocketed to the highest they had ever been, as the low hum of air conditioners could be heard in the dank, poor neighborhood of Raison D’être town. The students from there knew no trouble nor obstacle they could not vault over, and each one shown it in their watchful, endearing gazes.
All but Ushio. Ushio Laneme. He was the kid who you would look at, but not think twice about. He was the kid who you would look at the yearbook of whatever graduating class, and you wouldn’t look twice at him. He was the kid who when talked, you’d listen, but you would pay no heed to him. He was an out of place person. A sore thumb. No one could relate to him.
But what is it to really relate? What is it to really know a person?
Ushio piled off the old 486 bus, along with the rest of the happy go lucky students. He was a senior, and he quickly wished for school to hurry and end. But in reality, despite his massive differences, he held dear to the halcyon days that was high school. Ushio scratched his unruly, jet black bed hair and straightened out his student uniform that just so happened to be clamping around his stomach in a horrid twist zone. He made his way to class.
“The variable for this problem, y, must be found by subtracting 32 from both sides, and…†Mr. Haltorres droned on, as Ushio paid no real attention. Today was different. Whether it was the merciless sun or the organized environment, something made the entire day feel different. To Ushio, this feeling had the most pronounced effect.
For the first time, he felt like he would miss days like this; lazing about in a classroom, falling half asleep as he unlearned more than he actually learned about whatever subject he was hearing about. His gaze somehow, naturally turned to the window.
The sun. He looked at it, for a brief moment, fixing his gaze immediately afterwards to just below its blinding light. An arm hooked around his neck, his attention to the firey orange-like ball jettisoned to nothing. Apparently, without even noticing, class had already ended and students were talking about. “Yo! Ushio! Wanna hang out after school? Can’t be alone forever, ya know?†A student, brown blonde-ish hair chattered out with a few extra tugs at Ushio’s neck. Ushio knew the guy’s name well. Tonio: the class clown, the royal screw up, the butt. Whenever something smelled fishy, he was usually involved.
“No. I’d rather not get caught in one of your escapades.†Ushio murmured, still half asleep.
“Dude! There’s no reason for you to do that! School year’s ending, everyone’s about to part ways, and there’s news that all the graduation after parties are gonna get busted by the fuzz! And every day, I look over to your seat, and I wonder ‘What is that guy and why haven’t I messed with him yet?’ It’s a requirement I mess with everyone at least once!†Tonio prodded more and more, his firm arm lock tugging at every word in the last sentence.
“What… uh, what do you have planned?†Ushio regrettably questioned, his tongue already feeling like poison.
“The usual. Chicks. Well, it’s not really the usual if you come with us, but…â€
“No. Keep your silly midnight endeavors to yourself.â€
“… You gay?â€
“No!â€
“That’s good. So why not come along? We all gotta fill our needs, am I riiight?†Tonio released his arm lock, his words seemingly attempted to be more persuasive.
“I’m waiting for someone!†Ushio blurted in a rather high volume, Tonio stepped a bit back as if in surprised, but retained his composure and grinned, even chuckling a bit as everyone else in the room looked at the two.
“Ugh, Tonio again. Messing with someone.â€
“That guy is such a creep.â€
He disregarded the comments, and stared at Ushio’s eyes for but a second.
“I used to be like you. Minding nothing but my own business, thinking that whatever I had to say was worthless in comparison to everyone else. It’s such a drama case! I hated it!†Tonio spilled out, bending over to meet Ushio’s eye level as he was still sitting down. “So who is this someone? A past girlfriend? Massive crush you had since middle? Your mom?†Tonio prodded Ushio’s mind even more, smiling more at the last choice.
“… … … marriage.†Ushio muttered, his eyes trailing away from Tonio, not even wanting to meet them. He’d get laughed at for even saying such a thing, and he knew it.
“Look at me.†Tonio commanded, his tone almost completely changing into something that demanded respect. “There’s nothing to be embarrassed about if that’s your thing. I in fact respect you for that. Congrats on holding out for something like that, I couldn’t get past middle without my hormones giving in.â€
“… What?†Ushio looked at Tonio’s eyes in utter disbelief, as if he heard blasphemy. The guy had to be lying. Any other person would have laughed indefinitely at him, or at least question his abstinence.
“Sorry for messing with you. But I had to know what kind of person you were. I know I wouldn’t be able to stand graduating, looking back to see a kid no one hung out with, without even knowing who the kid was. So, your family? What’re they like?†His voice, bathed in some sincere feeling, made whoever listened to them want to reply. To obey.
“My family… I don’t know. I never knew them. My earliest memory is the orphanage. I had to work to get the tuition money to come here.â€
“Ouch. An orphan… no wonder no one barely bothered with you. No cell phone, no facebook, no 360 or live... It’s as if you wanted to be left alone!â€
“I’m used to it. I never found those appealing to me. Why talk through text when we have a god given tool specifically made for communication?â€
“Answer me this.†Tonio completely ignored Ushio’s last statement. “What is God to you? Do you blame him for your position?†He questioned. The air stood still. Ushio sat on what felt like pins and needles.
“… He gave me form. I could at least live to honor that.†Ushio replied.
“You pass. When the hellfire of Viel comes, you shall stand.â€
The words came out of nowhere. It echoed in the room, but Ushio was certain it was Tonio that said them. Tonio stood straight, and walked out of the room. Which directed Ushio’s attention to something else.
No one was moving. The hustle and bustle of the hallways were nonexistent. The surrounding conversations ceased, their participants unmoving, stares pointing in thoughtless directions. Time had stopped.
“W-wait! What?!†Ushio called out, absorbing the terrifying scene in seconds. He wanted answers. But as he exited the room in a near sprint-like state, his glancing saw everything. Tonio was gone, not even in the unmoving crowds.
Then, like a whisper, the unending masses of students began to move slowly, their movement going faster, and faster, until they reached a familiar speed. The uproar of their communication resumed, the hustle and bustle returned.
But Ushio stood there, confused. “… Viel? Hellfire? What?â€
