The history of Shattered Planes is vast and complex. We have gone so far from such a small premise, that one could take something and create entire universes out of it. Here we are today with so much done, and so much left to do. So, how did this RP come to be?
It all started one day in 2006 when
Comex was the administrator of a small board, Code Lyoko Trading Card Game, which achieved mediocre fame in it's day. The small board housed a large staff.
One day, Comex decided, out of pure randomness, to add a footer to the board which read:
"Code Lyoko is owned by whoever it is owned by,
which is not us."
The "which" was actually a hyperlink to a hidden section of the board, simply entitled "O RLY" which became used as a random spam board by those who found it. Due to its unofficial nature, the staff used it for a power abuse battle, editing topics within the board. Moderators would edit topics throughout the entire forum of "O RLY", declaring themselves "dictators" of the small spam board.
This concept of owning a forum section was quite the novel idea. New boards were added to this hidden section for members and staff to takeover. It was quite the fun mess of activities. Eventually, one moderator, K2323, took initiative and renamed the original "O RLY" board to "Japan" and declared himself "Emperor". Others followed suit.
Eventually, this owning of forums became a roleplay, with moderator Hikaru and moderator K2323 leading the new RP. It soon became a forum-wide craze, quickly developing a plot. Taking over planets, countries, you name it, and adding them to your kingdom was the basis for this plot.
Fast-forward a year. The RP is one of the most successful roleplays that the founding members have created, and is striving well, though it is still quite the mess. The year is 2007. Due to staff fighting, the RP is temporarily taken down. One of the roleplayers creates a carbon copy to the RP, a "sequel", when he believes the RP will not return. Even after it does return, he refuses to take down his sequel RP.
The sequel RP eventually becomes more successful than the original after the original returns, and the founding members decide to shut down the original and join the sequel, making the board official. So, what happened then?
The sequel was arguably more successful than the original, despite having serious plot holes and ripoffs of other fiction. It gathered a mass memberbase, and expanded on the original plot significantly. It introduced the concept of breaking the plot down into "seasons" much like a TV show does. It declared the Opposing Kingdoms (the original RP) as "Season 0". The sequel itself lasted for three seasons, finally ending at the end of 2008 due to staff fighting.
After a year of downtime, three of the board's former members (Nisorin, Gaserlake, and K2323) along with the sequel board's head administrator, Blackcat124gt, and eventually many others, decided to relaunch the board, creating a "Season 4". The board was created, for staff's eyes only, in the summer of 2009, and heavy work began. After six months of work, it opened to the public in December of 2009, eventually adapting a new name of "Shattered Planes".
Season 4 lasted for a year and a half. We, over that time period, eliminated most, if not all, plotholes, expanded more than ever on the plot, and created a wonderful system for roleplaying. After five and a half years since the founding of the Opposing Kingdoms, Season 5 followed, starting in January 2012. Unfortunately, it did not see the same success as Season 4 did. With member activity at a new low and fighting among members and staff at a new high, the board reached a new low by Summer 2012, when activity halted all together.
In an attempt to save the community, the staff launched two new events -- "Eclipse" and "Genesis". These events saw a temporary end to electrical technology and magic, two concepts which the roleplay flourished on. The two events created much controversy, and prompted members to leave all together. It was in August 2012 that the staff, with help from members, decided it was time to relaunch the board with a new image.
That new image... Starts now.
