Gently Rapping, Rapping on my Chamber Door
« on: December 21, 2012, 07:23:26 PM »
A black flash would appear somewhere near a town upon Autumnavia. Now, being in broad daylight this flash would be extremely obvious to anyone nearby. The flash itself didn't seem quite like black light or anything it seemed more like a complete of absence of light or a void and that was basically what it was. This flash was in fact a mass Shadow-Step, a movement of shadow from one planet to another.

Out of this black flash stepped around two dozen individuals, all apart from about five being full adults. None of them, including the children, were unharmed and they all seemed to stagger as they came out of the flash and one of them even dropped down. The other people cried out as they realised this person had died but it wasn't too difficult to comprehend considering the fist sized hole in her chest. The other people looked away and started to trudge towards the town.

All of the people looked near alike in a few basic aspects, all of them had feathers crowning their heads, some longer than the others, and all of them had feathers sliding out from the outsides of their forearms. The other thing they all had in common was the long black cloaks covering their backs, although most were ripped and frayed and exposed the wings sticking out of their backs. All of them also had either grey, black or white hair and usually yellow or orange eyes.

They would walk slowly towards the edge of the town, the children crying softly or silently and the adults breathing heavily as they clutched wounds and tried to prevent themselves from losing too much blood. They just hoped someone came soon and helped them.

Two bolts of blue lightening struck in front of them, blocking their way to the town. From the lightening appeared two beings, they were Enforcers, anthropomorphic watchers of Autumnavia. One was a fox, the other a bear named Kurkha.
"They're hurt..." The fox said.
"Hold it right there, we can't have you enter that town." Kurkha said, extending his hand. A hooting was heard in the distance, and the Enforcers heads snapped at the sound.
"Did you hear it?" Kurkha asked his companion as their eyes searched the distance.
"Incoming!" The fox said, and they both sprang back as three enormous owls landed in front of them, swooping down. Immediately the three shifted into more human forms.
"Begone keepers, these are our kin. They won't harm the Karmagans." Kurkha growled at them.
"Get them gone quickly, we'll have no trouble here."

One of the shapeshifters, a woman, turned to the group.
"Brothers and sisters. We are Owl Sages, related to your race. We're here to help." She said kindly, yet hurriedly.

As soon as the lightning struck down in front of the Ravens, they all pushed the children behind them and even the most wounded stepped in front of them, the shadows coalescing around their forms.

One of them stepped forwards, a tall male by the name of Ahnohem and he appeared to be about to speak until the sounds of the owls echoed around. The Corvinus Sage's eyes traveled slowly around as they waited for the aftermath. Sure enough, it didn't disappoint and three Owl Sages appeared before them.

"Gods, Owl Sages, it's been a while. We are Raven Sages and I suggest we go, the guardians of this town don't seem too friendly." Ahnohem spoke out, his voice rasping and labored as he clutched at his shoulder, blood dribbling down between his fingers.

"We will explain all when we get somewhere safer, I assure you but for now we need somewhere to rest and tend to our wounded... and dead." He added the last two words in, in nothing but the tiniest whisper, casting a glance back to the fallen Sage behind them.

"Don't mind them. They mean well." One of the men spoke.
"Olfur, get the others and warn them. Fly quickly!" The woman bade, and the as-of-yet unspoken Owl Sages took to the sky like a bullet, switching back to his owl form.
"I am Bettreena. The rest of our kin will be here for your aid, like the winds they will fly. Our settlement is far. Diorik, gather them up and assess them. Take the children first." Diorik nodded and lit a torch, checking the wounds of the children first.
"Sit, sit. We will offer you what comfort we can." Bettreena shot a flame ball into some brush, and the fire started to glow bright and warm.
"Gather round yonder, the flames I pray will bring some comfort." She ushered them around the hot fire and drew some bandages from a small bag she carried. It wasn't much, but she started to tend to the children Diorik indicated were worst injured.

As the Sages were checked the children appeared to have suffered from minimal damage, one had a broken arm but that was the worst of it, the rest all had minor scrapes and cuts with a few small burns littered through them.
The adults were a different story however, most of them sported large wounds from gashes and many broken bones to one person with a cauterized stump for an arm that was quickly turning septic. It would appear that they had got into a fight with something with powerful fire magic but the Owl Sage's use of it didn't seem to affect them.
"I thank you, Bettreena, it means a lot to know that others still help sages in need. I am Ahnohem, the leader of this small group. I shan't say what happened but it wasn't pretty." The sage told the Owls as he drew his people around the fire, most of them collapsing in heaps with a heavy and heartfelt sigh as the warmth spread through them whilst others stared into the flame as though it could tell them something, others still just looked upwards, their teeth gritted as they remembered.
"I'm sorry for the sudden arrival, we had to escape and we had heard of the place that the Owls went. Thankfully one of our kind... Manateem, the one who died, had known an Owl Sage and could remember their signature. From that it was easy enough to follow and we arrived here."

Diorik expediently made a stint of improvised materials and lashed it to the child's arm, setting the bone.  He moved quick, checking the rest of children, and not having the materials or time ot tend all their wounds, he set to checking the adults. He paused for a second, staring at the gruesome stump.
"Bettreena..." He called, eyes still on the stump. Bettreena rushed over and gazed at it.
"Mein got..." She whipered to herself.
"What should we do?" Diorik asked quickly.
"Wait for Ulrich. He'll know how to handle it. Now, handle the ones you can!" She urged, and they started to bandage up the gashs on one of the more injured adults.

The Sage with the stump just gave the two Owls a weary smile and nodded to them. "No need to worry, I'll be fine. You should tend to the others, I can't be helped, I understand." A dry laugh came from his throat and he wandered off to join his brethren by the fire.
The other adults would thank the Owl Sages as they were bandaged up and promises of many things were given to their Saviours. Things from their possessions, to their feathers down to even their bodies as they were just so glad to have been saved by those who didn't judge them for looks or past.
Ahnohem was the only one who hadn't went to the fire and he was also mostly unharmed, a cut on his leg and temple and a slight burn on his arm but he was fine otherwise. The Raven walked over to Bettreena and gently rested his hand on her shoulder. "I thank you, Bettreena, it means a lot. Is there any way at all I can help? I could carry supplies or such for my people or I could help with binding wounds, I am lightly wounded myself so I needn't worry."

Bettreena didn't stop what she was doing to speak, just kept milling around the wounded.
"Just wait for our kin, you can help them when they arrive. If you have the supplies to bandage up your companions then do so by all means. Otherwise, rest brother. Let us handle this."

Diorik was fast, but most of his bandaging was far from perfect. It wouldn't last them long, but it would stave off infection for now.
