Posssible Novel/ Novella

[Beware Ye Who Enter Here]

I like to write. Sometimes alot. Sometimes more than others. This is a story I'm working on.

Setting: About 125 yrs from now humanity has developed inter-planetary and and Inter-solar system technology. Because of mass overpopulation, many people migrate away from Earth and move to other solar systems and planets. Along the way, they find a species of aliens with superior technology. First contact is peaceful and made by the UIPS (United Interplanetary systems), but after 5 years tensions flare and war breaks out. After 7 years a truce is declared with the help of a smaller race of aliens. Together they formed a federation of sorts. The UIPS controls most all of humanity but there are outer colonies that have less allegiance to the UIPS. Now, 15 years after the Contact War, a new threat has come. These aliens use advanced technology and never have been seen face-to-face. Instead they use high-tech robotics and superior weapons and tech.  Now the veterans of the Contact War (which would include most of the main cast) are being called back into service.

The main character lives on a outer planet. He is an ex-HUIPS soldier and is called into service. This is optional and he refuses. Unfortunately his planet is attacked and he has to escape .

Characters:(in terms of the Five Man Band + tropes) Zachary Wagner(Hero, anti-hero, deadpan snarker), Admiral Dreyson(minor-ish character), Ji Yong(Pilot/the chick), Asad Al-Ubsod(scary black guy, big guy, genius bruiser) in editing.

Possible Plot so far: Starts on the planet of Cardonis. Zachary is a veteran of the Contact War, who lives on the on Cardonis. He lives with his wife and son, and is asked to come back into the military because the UIPS is losing its war against the new threat that is coming to destroy all life in the galaxy. Nicknamed the ‘Archive’ from what the UIPS could get from whatever systems it hacked, or was able to gain access to. The Archive uses advanced technology to devastate the human civilizations. Zachary is reluctant to go back to war, and tells Dreyson that he will think on it. Later that night, the Archive attacks Cardonis and Zachary is forced to flee with his crew. In the chaos both his wife and son are killed by a plasma beam from an Archive ship. Zachary and his crew flee to the UIPS held planet of Elysium. There they find Dreyson in person who is there to prepare defences. After a few days the Archive attacks again and the crew has to fight on the ground, while their ship is commandeered by the military and Sarah must fly it while the rest of the crew fight on the ground.. The USSC barely wins the battle and find out that that was only a strike force.

A bit stereotypical. The badass veteran, initially reluctant to enter the war, becomes unleashed when his family is killed. We've all seen that kind of story a hundred times before.

The whole thing sounds like a Halo ripoff. Sorry Zak, I'm just being brutally honest with ya.

I'm working on a new storyline.... this one only has humans in it.

I think these are going to be Sci Fi war novel/novellas.

I'll list the  factions for you though:

Shattenkrieg(people who want to split the USC)

Archive(Evil cyborg humans who worship information and tech)

USC(United Systems Coalition) The basic government that comes from the UN.

Setting: The planet of Cardonis is a peaceful colony world in Alpha Centauri. But out of nowhere they are attacked by a separatist/terrorist group know as the Shattenkrieg. They get out a distress signal to the near bye military base on the planet Styx. The protagonists are a group of special operation soldiers who are part of the relief force. they go to Cardonis, defeat the Shattenkrieg, and celebrrate victory. In two days the Archive attack for an unknown reason and our protagonist have to fight them off. They manage to hold their position. Then reports of the Archive searching the planet come up. The Archive start digging and then our protagonists have to stop them from uncovering whatever they are trying to uncover. It turns out that the Archive are digging up some sort of ancient artifact. Our protagonists end up stopping the Archive and the USC starts to uncover it on their own. (The artifact may or may not be a beacon of an ancient civilization which causes some aliens to attack in another book or something)
