Hey, I wasn't the one that decided to use the thread for their own personal venting needs, or to insult people.
Also, what happened to "you can celebrate any way you want to"? I guess that only includes the ways you want to celebrate it, huh?

I do love how I've been repeatedly insulted, yet apparently I'm the one being a dick.
Also, it was a good job ignoring me until you referenced the fact. Then it stopped being ignoring me, and started being acknowledging me. Which is the exact opposite of ignoring. Unless you want to argue that, in some way, you can directly use someone's name without acknowledging them. I'd suggest basing that argument on dialetheism, personally.

"A lot of US schools/students do this type of exchange annually."

A lot of schools across multiple countries have exams that fall over the valentines period. No-one's claiming it's valentines tradition.

"There is no right way or wrong way to celebrate something."

On this basis, not celebrating the holiday is a valid way to celebrate the holiday. Which is a logical fallacy, and as such disproves the statement. I actually pointed this out to you before.

"I was raised doing this. I've never been part of a couple on this day until this year."

I already answered that one. This is a reminder about hypocrisy, since you often complain about me repeating myself.

"And I really don't care anymore about what you're arguing about"

I assume the fact that you didn't care is the reason you continued to argue with it. Looping back into logical fallacies.

"The real argument was "me asking for attention" v. "Me actually celebrating the damn holiday in the way I celebrated it growing up"."

Really? Because I was just responding to the complaints you had with what I said up above. I'm sure if that's what you were complaining about, it would have shown up when I was responding at some point along the line.
But, to address this issue, since you've brought it up, I was agreeing with Hikaru that this thread doesn't really seem to be about valentines, and is actually just another art thread. My basis being the above logic, that it doesn't match the "spirit of the holiday". In actual fact, the fact that you then decided to use it as a vent topic also demonstrates that it's not a valentines thread, since that also doesn't fall into the "spirit of the holiday". It also doesn't fall into your own definition of the holiday.

Since I'm apparently being dragged into this...

You're posting on an RP forum, so I'm assuming everyone has a value for words. Words have to mean something, or what's the value of RPing? Taking a word, such as Valentines, and putting a new meaning to it, degrades the value of the word. Yes, this is the way you've always celebrated valentines. It's still not the correct way, and using the word in that sense degrades the meaning. A more American example that people can probably understand better is to say that it's "not in the spirit of the holiday". Like horror at Christmas, or stockings at halloween. Just because it's the way you've always celebrated it, doesn't mean that it's correct, and no matter how you phrase it, what you're inevitably saying is "I've done something wrong for a long time, so I'm gonna carry on doing it that way".
There was also a fun analogy with burning confectionary, but that can wait for another day.
Also, opening by insulting my character is still ad hominem, and as such a fallacious argument. That doesn't stop being a thing by doing it more. Just sayin'.

My character for Lyoko's Campaign.

I'll edit the Familiar's ref sheet in once it's done.

Also, Hik, your regular AC and your flat-footed are the wrong way round, unless I missed something. Haven't seen Rogue played Pacifist before, this should be interesting. ^_^

Edit: Have a familiar ref sheet!

Then your reaction to this should be of a similar level to your reaction to this. The simple fact of the matter is, you are more apathetic to this than issues that directly affect yourself, despite the fact that your own issues have less severity. You are claiming that people are over-reacting, but that isn't true at all, which was actually the latter half of my post, which everyone has happily ignored, because I brought up their own personal problems, which according to the comparative level of reaction, you all consider to be a worse offence than the issue in Connecticut.
The point I'm getting at is, you are welcome to claim that people are over-reacting about this issue. But doing so, when your reaction to other less severe issues is equal or greater, is very hypocritical. Hence where I picked people out, and why I didn't attack Hikaru for the same thing. Because she completely acknowledged her own boundaries on the subject.
Man, it almost feels like I am repeating the same thing over and over again because people don't read. Specifically to people who complain that I always do that to people, and claim that it isn't necessary.

Also, I totally forgot to mention last post, but, Cap totally has me beat on this one. I have to agree with his post.

The issue here isn't that you consider the reactions overblown, it is simply that it doesn't directly affect you that causes you to not care. Also, accusing other people of over-reacting? Possibly a little hypocritical.

Congratulations. You managed to repeat exactly what I said.

A brief analysis on some things you people are saying:
Zak: The number of times I have had conversations with you where you have said things along the lines of "my love life sucks, FML", or "someone did something on SP that I don't like, I am going to quit and burn the internet" are beyond my count. These are also the kind of things that happen every day. The issue here isn't that you consider the reactions overblown, it is simply that it doesn't directly affect you that causes you to not care. Also, accusing other people of over-reacting? Possibly a little hypocritical.
Swift: Just... read what I said to Zak. Pretty much the same applies. As I recall, when you had your cat taken away, you were in tears over that. Guess what, that crap happens every day too!
Hik: I... actually think you are the only person who understands your own motivation here. I personally disagree, but I absolutely respect your opinion, because you make a valid point, and actually believe that point.

IMHO, these kind of events aren't typical, worldwide. Yes, people die. What is the issue is not the fact that people died, although that is always a tragedy in itself, but more in the nature of their death, and the individual (or possible partnership, in the case of the Connecticut instance) that caused it. Using the American case as the example (since I haven't actually caught up on the Chinese one to date), the issue isn't that a few dozen people died, but that a large group of children died in an outright unpleasant fashion, probably the most unpleasant fashion imaginable. Moreover, this was caused by one (possibly two) people. Those things are horrific, and not the kind of thing that happen every day. Specifically, this was the largest culling of elementary school children ever recorded, if memory serves. If you want to claim that's something that happens every day, I am more than happy to see the statistics on it. The issue is not strictly speaking the number of people that died, but the events surrounding it.
Of course, I'm more than happy to discuss this fact. I'll keep an eye on this topic, or you're welcome to message me anywhere else, if you wanna argue about it more fluently. =3

You're going to use someone elses off-site idea? Lame, very lame.

Actually, I completely agree with this statement. It's hella lame that you guys wanna reuse my CE event from last year, without my permission. Space zombies was my thing.
*Goes on to reference Reevers from Serenity, Necromorphs from Dead Space, and whatever the zombies in Doom are called*
If you're gonna re-use my idea, adding the single adjustment of slapping on a tagline stolen from Dawn of the Dead (when there's no more room left in hell), at least do me the justice of crediting me.

(For the record, this isn't entirely serious. I don't actually think K2's stealing my idea, and as I pointed out, space zombies wasn't an original idea when I did it. Just making a point. =D )

*Clears throat*

Um, since we're apparently making a ruling that recreating earthlike flora and fauna is a statistical impossibility, this actually means that no humans on SP would have a source of nutrition (since the same logic would apply to any of the multitudinous complex strings of amino acids and hydrocarbons it takes to make your body function), and as such, any humans on the board who have lived longer than, let's say... 25 weeks, assuming you're really fat, should be dead.
Equally, the same principle should be applied to parallel technology curves making cross-planet technology incompatible (and as such rendering most universal communications useless, along with 99% of any trading that could possibly happen), and I'm sure I don't need to point out how it applies to linguistics. Perhaps this is one of those areas where we brush over the statistical probabilities in favour of good roleplaying? Hm?

Also, Hiro, be aware that I am more than happy to read over every request you've ever made and find every scientific inaccuracy you've left in them.   >=D

*Sighs*
Based on human statistics, one cubic meter of air has enough oxygen to last you two hours. I'd estimate that most ships have roughly thirty cubic meters of air per person (about the size of a small room). Which means there would be enough oxygen to last them almost three days. As I've pointed out, effectively everyone can manually run their engines without electricity in an emergency, assuming there's at least one guy on board that knows how their engines work (if you don't have an engineering crew onboard, it's kinda your own fault, dude).
Basically what I'm saying is, you have three days to reach the nearest planet. Probably more, in fact, since every race on the forum is "they're humans but better", so you probably don't need to breath as often. Anyone complaining that they're going to die because of this is working on the basis that it's completely impossible to come up with a creative solution for anything. That wasn't even a creative solution. "Turn on the engines and fly home" is not a creative solution.

Actually, what you should be worrying about isn't life support at all, it's space debris. Without your shields, a pair of sunglasses in orbit could probably rip through your hull. Enjoy. =3

^Still arguing that "you removed two things and it's now impossible to do anything". Man, sure is a shame I didn't just post an explanation for how to make all your tech work, then mock someone for ignoring that I typed all of that and complaining that he couldn't make all his tech work. Or that would make you look equally as stupid as Lyoko, right?

I agree with this point about events.

If I may make a suggestion, from my limited knowledge, every threat the players have ever faced are some form of conscious enemy. That would be a great place to start mixing it up. A new type of threat will create a completely new reaction from players.

More than that, I'd have to look into the history of the site, but I'm guessing most of the events have been "crazy powerful being/race is doing bad stuff, possibly crazy powerful being/race is also doing good stuff, let's all paunch the bad guy!" Doesn't take twenty seconds to break that train of thought and throw in some actual variation for a change. Just sayin'.

But yeah. For anyone who's still struggling: Unless you're using EMTs and tesla coils (which I highly doubt, since I know most of you aren't that smart. No offence. Being smart isn't everything. Unless you're me), your technology isn't necessarily reliant on electricity, except for control. There's no reason you can't manually boot your engines, land your fleet, and fix stuff up to not be electricity reliant from the ground. This one was free. Next time you need solutions, you can negotiate for them. <3

Well, all space-faring ships are out of commission. There is no control over them any more, and their crews are likely dead. Otherwise, you make a good point.

Man, wouldn't it be funny if two people posted these comments directly back to back like this. Like, one person going "here's a possible solution" and the next person immediately going "all hope is lost, we'll never find a solution!" No, wait, that totally just happened, didn't it? Never mind.

All those things ARE electronic except gas and steam. Nuclear technology simply uses nuclear components as a generator of electricity.

This... is actually a really misleading comment. What you mean is, all of these things are generally used to create electricity. That doesn't mean those are the only uses. Using your own example, nuclear technology produces electricity by creating heat, which is used as the heating implement in steam power (yes, nuclear reactors are big kettles). You don't have to use it in this way though. You could route that into something more mechanical.

But, I have to agree with Swift here. If I'm understanding the argument correctly, everyone's complaint is "we based everything we have on two things, and now we are being punished for our unoriginality!" If that's your complaint... why are you playing a competitive RP in the first place? And, if the answer is "for the RP value", then good job! Your characters still exist, and they now have real challenges to RP around!

But yeah. For anyone who's still struggling: Unless you're using EMTs and tesla coils (which I highly doubt, since I know most of you aren't that smart. No offence. Being smart isn't everything. Accepted Races / The Aberrant
« on: July 22, 2012, 12:14:59 PM »
Name: The Aberrant

Physical Description: A fluid race with a thick elasticated skin. They can take any simple physical form (although they wouldn't be detailed enough to say, recreate someone's face) within their size limit (conveniently about the same size as the average human). Their colour, however, is a steady silver-blue.

Mental Description: An Aberrant's conscious thought is purely made of their magnetic field, rather than having a solid physical storage. This leads to a few interesting advantages. Firstly, they're able to directly control their physical shape (I'll go into that in the bio-func section), reducing reaction times. Secondly, they're able to sense other magnetic fields with incredible accuracy. Furthermore, by ceasing to concentrate on maintaining their own magnetic fields, they are able to warp other fields around them to their whims, in effect manipulating whatever caused them.

Psychological Description: Due to their mental nature, Aberrant avoid each other as much as possible. As a result, they're generally incredibly solitary creatures. However, because of their ability to sense magnetic fields, they're also incredibly empathic towards those that are near by (I'll talk about that in the bio-func section too). So basically, they like to surround themselves with other races. =3

Biological Functionality (For Swift's Benefit): So, this section is gonna be stupid long. You can skip this if you do not like science.
Physiology - So the majority of their body is liquid mercury, and their skin is a flexible Mercury-copper alloy. So, silver with a copper-blue tinge. With no skeleton or musculature, they're not able to move by the usual means, but fortunately their consciousness is pure magnetism. So they just tweak the fields a little, change the density ratios, and move like that. That means no cells. Nice and simple! ^_^
Notes on Magnetism - Because the brain functions through various different moving charges (charged ions for chemical reactions, electrical exchange within neurons, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera), the human mind has a really complex magnetic field around it (because a magnetic field is just the product of a moving charge). So, by sensing someone's magnetic field, they're able to read thoughts. Using science. Science, bitches. As a side note, by changing their own magnetic field, they can effect the magnetic fields of others, and cause physical effects as a result (think like when you move a magnet towards another magnet, and it causes it to move).
Senses - Because of the lack of cells, they don't really have the usual senses. However, they can detect sound through molecule movement, and visually map areas around them based on the magnetic fields around them. Scent, taste and touch, however, are lost to them. Anything that carries a charge though, can be detected if it moves relative to their reference frame.
Reproduction - Physically, reproduction is entirely asexual, and basically treats them as one giant cell (Yes, they do need some source of Mercury to do this). Boom. Psychologically, however, three minds or more are required to connect to reproduce. However, these don't all have to be Aberrant minds. More than that, we won't go into it. That's just gross, dude. Why do you want to know about weird mind sex? Like, seriously, man.
Energy - To sustain themselves, like anything in the universe, Aberrant need energy. rather than ingesting or breathing, they just syphon energy from the magnetic fields they interact with.
I think that's everything necessary, but if there's anything I've forgotten, feel free to remind me.

Origin: I don't quite know how the whole planet creation thing works, so feel free to tell me I'm doing it wrong. =P
The Aberrant originate on a small, earth-temperature planet (named Abhor) formed in a debris ring of a white dwarf. The world was similar to earth in size, and was even mostly liquid, much like earth.
However it was almost entirely mercury based.
This was the perfect condition for the Aberrant to evolve. Born at the bottom of a colossal sea of mercury, they had the perfect breeding ground, and there was little need to move anywhere. It was millennia before they knew there was something beyond that, and then millennia more before they realised the possibilities of space.

Civilisation: Originally, because there was no need to feed, the Aberrant had little need for physical possessions. What they did need, however, was space. So instead of a physical currency, the Aberrant made territory their currency.
This was okay early on, but as time went on and the population rose, transport became vital. As a result, they never really developed weapon technology.

Religion: They inexplicably worship cats, and abhor trolls.

Faction: I'll... be doing this bit later.

I dunno, there's probably other stuff I could talk about, but I'll let people ask for stuff, rather than just clogging up more of the screen with unnecessary typing.
