You know,
« on: May 18, 2011, 09:07:19 PM »
The only thing we measure about a character is magic. Maybe we can measure other things about them, like their physical and mental strength, and how resilient they are? It could be divvied up in a level system similar to Magic or so, and also give the people making their characters a better idea about the parameters of their characters.

Yes, I got this idea off the joke character iluge, but it's certainly an interesting point, no?

Kylexx is a basic human but being female she has a tendency to be unstable mentally (so at times she can handle things, others she can't) but she is magically and strength strong.

Yeah, we can say these things about characters in their bios or something, but the only thing that really matters on a character sheet is magic. Of course magic is great and all, but we could just say a certain character is really strong but have no idea until it's actually put into practice, and then turns out the kind of strength we were thinking of to begin with either falls short or is a bit unnatural.

Same with resilience, we may not really have an idea of how much pain a character can take until someone actually does cause them pain, and then we just assume they can either take all the pain in the world or would die immediately. It would be somewhat useful to have this stuff measured so we can better RP our characters.

But to better RP our characters we have to actually be the character, no? So then only we need to understand how far they can go before they break, it shouldn't matter to someone on the outside.

She brings up a valid point. Besides, I usually use the magic number as a rough estimate for that time, anyways. I'd imagine the entire thing would depend on how the character is played, really.

That would be understandable, and if we were going by that logic, we wouldn't need to measure magic. But we do, because magic ability does matter to everyone else outside of the character RPing it for whatever reason, so why not anything else? Or is magic just so important that it beats everything no matter what? D:

Magic is measured so people (Hawkeye) don't pull a move from DBZ villains and blow up a planet in one post.
If magic is leveled, it can easily be argued they can't do that.
If it's not... well it's magic, so who's to say they didn't have enough energy for that?

That would be why people do care about magic level, of course.

But whose to say a person wouldn't just try to, like, punch a planet so hard that it cracks it's way to destruction? Or a person enduring being inside the inner core of a star for twenty three years, only to come out completely unscathed? Maybe even having the ability to hold a freaking moon and throw it? There couldn't really be any argument in terms if the character could do it or not because there isn't a set system to measure a character's strength by like there is on magic.

To be fair, thats common sense, as its biologically and fundementally impossible. Magic itself is different, mainly because its magic. It doesn't have the same limitations as physical objects do.

I don't think common sense is a common theme here on SP...

But ah well, I've been away for the last forever and a half, maybe it's different now.

Probably not but I understand what you mean and I also understand why we have a number. It's so we have a system and so at least others can get a general feel on how that character is. Just because it's a number doesn't really matter ;) because a 5.5 can easily be different for different people, no? You can easily catch a person off guard though in a way I think it would be even easier to catch one off guard if you don't have a number. Maybe we should have that changed to PMing the number to the people reviewing the profile.

I doubt we would have a number if it weren't for Hawkeye. :/
