Okay, so, I'm pretty sure that I suck at combat and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with it.

K2, Orph and Hik are the best fighters on the board. Orph used to teach the combat classes back in the O.R.P.H.
Seeing the world through a child's eyes is truly a unique experience. It helps you to retrieve that sense of awe, magic and wonder that you lost as you lost your innocence. Tell me, when was the last time that you thought of those childhood dreams? You know, the ones that you used to spend all your time wondering and fantasizing about? Have you forgotten them so easily? Have you forgotten what it felt like to see something for the first time, to see the magic in the mundane? Everyone says you should take the time to 'Stop and smell the roses'. But you should also take the time to look for the fairies, embrace the wind and enjoy the rain. Just once today, stop for a moment and look into that little piece of nature you pass everyday. Perhaps you may see something you did not notice before.

I'd think they'd be reading this thread, but apparently not. Go ahead.

HOW TO BEAT HIKARU IN A FIGHT How to achieve victory in Play-By-Post Forum-Based Original Fantasy/Scifi Roleplays

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH. LET'S DOOOOOOOOOOOOO THIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIS.

STEP ONE. GET. LOOSE.

Aight, aight, aight, so you wanna fight, fight, fight! The first step is to FIND WHAT GETS YOU IN THE MOOD. For some people it's calm music. FOR SOME PEOPLE IT'S MUSIC WITH YELLING IN IT! Some people need energy drinks (don't consume alcohol if you're under the legal drinking age) AND SOME FUCKERS NEED FUCKING WATER. You just gotta find what works for you.

FOR ME... I like some kickass music and a tall Monster when I'm fighting. Here's some songs I listen to when fighting:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0V7aUT13qtM
ROW ROW FIGHT DA POWAH (Libera Me From Hell). While not my PERSONAL favorite fighting music, it certainly gets the job done, and this is perhaps Jeebus' favorite for the most epic of fights. Listening to this song while writing your post tends to give you EPIC FUCK YEAH SPUR OF THE MOMENT type attacks, not strategy-based attacks. Try it out.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ka_sHy9cVH0
All Along The Watchtower (BSG Version)
My own personal favorite for scifi SPACE battles, I.E. ships fighting ships, this song generally gives me a perfect mix between STRATEGY capabilities and HEADSTRONG capabilities, allowing the juices of my mind to flow in a perfect balance. I don't use this song as often for MAGIC battles. This song generally gives me the feeling of uncertainty in a fight, so I often use it when I feel like I'm loosing edge.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XZIcTUCOAUg
Chain by BACK-ON.
I don't care if you like anime or not, THIS SONG IS PERFECT FOR MAGIC-BASED FIGHTS. Magic-based fights require A LOT of typing, and this song generally just makes me type SO MUCH FASTER, and the FASTER I TYPE THE FASTER I IMAGINE MY CHARACTERS ATTACKING, and the FASTER MY CHARACTERS ATTACK THE MORE ATTACKS THEY CAN MANAGE AT A TIME, and the MORE ATTACKS THEY CAN MANAGE AT A TIME THE FASTER THEY CAN WIN. FUCK YES. Plus, the fast pace of this song just energizes you and makes you WANNA FIGHT. LET'S DO IT. YEAHHH. Again, good for magic based fights more than space based fights. Magic based fights require A LOT MORE STRATEGY and a lot more direct action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCe-Bnz6msY
I Will Not Bow by Breaking Benjamin.
I listen to this one sometimes when I'm fighting, Hikaru generally listens to it more in fights. It's good, in my opinion, more for strategy, but it keeps the headstrong edge you need in a fight so you don't give in, because I assure you, most battles here are wars of aggression. The enemy tries to wear you down. You can't let that happen. Still, this song's slow enough that it gives you time to think while you type, instead of that last song where your brain has to be moving at like 50 billion miles per hour.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f0o20z6jsMw
FUCK YEAH PONIES.

Jeebus also recommends you check out Pendulum.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIRNdveLnJI&ob=av2n
Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold.
Okay, so this isn't always THE BEST song for fighting, but it sometimes works for me. DO NOT TRY TO PLOT WHILE LISTENING TO THIS SONG. This song is good for fights that require NO STRATEGY WHAT-SO-EVER, in my opinion, I.E. fights where your opponent is severely outmatched or certain small space fights. Also good for things like resistance movements, breaking into secure structures and fighting guards, or fighting mass armies.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HTvu1Yr3Ohk&ob=av3n
Headstrong by Trapt.
A must for fighting, this one is used to make your senses increase in a fight. As a result, you pay more attention to the other person or people and what they're post included, and your brain, now alert, is constantly thinking of ways to counter said attacks or better yet, use those attacks to your advantage. Great for strategy-based fights.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xvshX3vAz0
Ladies And Gentlemen by Saliva.
I like to play this one at a loud volume. It's pretty slow, which makes it wonderful for strategy, but it's pretty versatile, the amount of raw energy it inspires and it's sudden breaks makes it also wonderful for headstrong fights. Can be used practically anywhere in a fight. Be careful, though, it's slower pace could make you susceptible to giving in.

A few other good songs for fighting...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1F3Nd-JYts (Thank you, UnStellar.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FF5fS2vRZYg (ONE MORE TIME.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oc7ulZ4eNlQ (The title is literally "Fight Music".)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsO6ZnUZI0g&ob=av3e (Sorry, but no list is complete without some Kanye.)

Soo of course getting in the mood is just the pre-pre-pre stuff. You with me still bruh?

Alright. Let's do this....

NOW. On SP, there are generally four main types of battles:

- Ship to Ship Combat
- Magic to Magic Combat
- Ship To Magic Combat
- Technology (non-ship) to Magic Combat

There's a lot more, but we're gonna start with those three. Each are totally different animals from each other. Each are equally challenging. Each have their pros and cons, their ways of gameplay... Everything is different for each of them.

WHICH SHALL WE START WITH? I can cover all if you'd like, or just some. Just let me know.

Ah, yes, my favorite type of combat. THIS type of combat requires insane amounts of brute forcing and strategy. Where-as technology takes time to produce and is a battle of two forces with limited resources, magic is a much more unpredictable type of combat which requires you to be able to outdo your opponent, sometimes in a mere instant. Let us discuss...

This RP was founded in 2006 by Hikaru, Kai, and myself, among others. Back in the original days, we didn't really have any technology. There were no ship battles, hardly any guns... It was all magic. We created a system which required innovation to achieve victory, a system which, surprisingly, has helped me out in real life. In these types of battles, creativity really is the key.

A great way to learn how to fight with magic is to read other topics where people fought with magic, but forget that, the only really good fights with magic here are the ones where the fighting was REALLY ADVANCED. We've gotta start you off smaller.

Let's do this.

I need a character to work with from you. Post a template here, or, at the bare minimum, a link. One of your existing characters. The one you're fighting with right now is preferred.

Here's my character:

Name: Zere
Age: Like thousands, maybe close to a million years old. He appears to be an old man.
Race: Sage
Alliance: Anrufe
Biography: Long story. Was a Keeper of the embodiment of Destruction (one of the original four who sealed Destruction in Erebus where he would slumber for centuries). He was a subject of the Genesis Kingdom, ruled by one of his fellow Keepers, where he was a minority. He, unlike most of the kingdom, lacked the strong Genesis Magic that the Dragon Sages of this Kingdom had. He joined with other minorities to form a group within the Kingdom known as District 23.

District 23 fabricated a mass war between the Genesis Kingdom and the Phoenix Kingdom that would eventually lead to both kingdoms dying out. In a final battle with the Genesis King, he was "sealed" inside a blue orb, meaning that he and the rest of the District 23 were literally inside the blue orb, trapped in a sort of prison realm which was inside the blue orb itself. He would spend the next century trying to escape.

Finally, someone found the orb he was trapped in. That someone was a young four-to-five year old Hikaru Tyris of the Era Village, a Phoenix-Dragon Sage. Zere tricked the young girl into releasing him from his prison where he would proceed to further trick her into leading him into the Era Village where she lived. On the night that Hikaru's twin brothers, the heirs to the power of the Genesis King himself, were born, Zere tricked Hikaru into destroying the Era Village as he attempted to get his revenge against the Genesis King by destroying the remnants of his precious power.

As the village was burning in flames, Hikaru herself attempted to destroy her twin brothers. She was unable to do so, due to their enormous amounts of power locked within them. With her inability to destroy the two infants, she did the next best thing. She locked their dragon powers deep within their soul1. With only a small amount of Phoenix Magic within their blood, not really at their disposal, and now no Genesis Magic they could use, they were rendered powerless.

That would eventually change after years, but that's a story for another day.

Zere took Hikaru under his wing. In the last battle that took place within the village, Zere and Hikaru confronted a team of three Guardians, self-proclaimed inter-dimensional "police" who were trying to stop the two. Zere, in that battle, started his training of Hikaru in dark magic, teaching her much about reading from a spellbook in that battle alone. They walked away alive.

Zere trained Hikaru for years, often taking her on trips to various villages of enemies that Zere needed to destroy while Zere himself investigated various things about his past. Fast-forward thirteen years, Hikaru is eighteen years old. She's incredibly strong now. Zere sends her on her way to destroy her brothers once and for all, while he basically vanishes, keeping low for the next few years.

With not going out of Zere's story but just to explain something, Hikaru and her two brothers would go on to break into the SP dimension ("Mortal Dimension"), after years of it being in exile. As many sages now discovered this dimension, those three in particular would establish three kingdoms and take over much of it, becoming known as the Sage Three...

Zere would meet back up with his pupil and her brothers in the SP Dimension when her brother, who didn't remember Zere at all, hosted a magic tournament known as the Excel Tournament. There, Zere, who only Hikaru happened to recognize, fought to achieve victory... But his true goal was to destroy K2323 and Kai, who had unlocked the Genesis King's power and were now a lot stronger than they had been when they were born.

Zere had become a master of Sealing magic, using "seals" to do all sorts of things like trapping objects within pocket dimensions, changing personalities, etc. He used these seals to control Kai and force him to work alongside Zere. With some of the strongest magic users around gathered at the tournament, Zere freed his long-sealed people of District 23, and with them and Kai's inside help, began their assault at the Excel Tournament.

They would be stopped, and after a day or so of intermission, the tournament finals commenced. During the final battle between Kai and Emily (may have been semifinals, don't remember), Zere once more launched an attack and basically destroyed a lot. He successfully managed to kill K2323, and nearly killed Hikaru and her apprentice, Emily. K2323, trapped in the Spirit Realm and waiting to be judged, used an incredibly powerful spell to lock Zere in the Spirit Realm, trading places with him so he could once more join the living.

Zere would eventually be freed from his prison in the Spirit Realm by a rogue clone of Kai named KiaB, who offered him and several others who had long fought the Sage Three to join a group he was forming known as the Anrufe. He obliged. Together, they caused a lot of damage in their first few days, taking advantage of a crisis which was ongoing for the people of the dimension.

The Anrufe eventually settled into their new life, settling in their base at the Ground Island. After helping cause a lot of destruction such as with the rising of the Twilight Empire, and various other events, the Anrufe became well-known for their movements. After the fall of the Sage Three and the rise of various mortal, technological empires in the dimension, the Anrufe became a major power. Being one of the only major forces of magic left in the dimension, they became an enemy of the Alliance, an alliance of mortal empires with major political power in the region.

Without going into too much detail of all the events of the Anrufe, let us fast forward to more recent events. Ten years after the Nyx War, the war which caused the downfall of both the Alliance and the Nyx Federation, the Anrufe awaited their great return. For the last ten years, Zere had been in a sort of hibernation, as had the rest of the Anrufe, training by feeding magic and spirit energy into their body. Basically, they supercharged their batteries.

One day, Chaos unbinded Zere from his slumber. The two Anrufe operatives had a lot of work ahead of them. They had to find their leader, KiaB, a new body. He had sustained many damages from fighting in the Nyx War ten years before. Chaos and Zere set off to find the perfect host. (See this topic: http://shatteredplanes.com/forum/index.php?topic=99.0)

After visiting various worlds of such groups as the Legacy Empire, the Archive, and more, the two were still so much less closer to finding KiaB a body. That situation eventually resolved itself when KiaB found his own body. Shortly afterwards, Chaos took power of the Anrufe away from KiaB. With Chaos in charge, Zere now had a whole new array of missions to go on.

One particular mission? The two were going to get rid of Kai Tyris once and for all. When they attacked one of his planets (See this topic: http://shatteredplanes.com/forum/index.php?topic=395.0) a large battle occurred. Zere ended up nearly dying when Kai attacked him. Kai's attack would have drained Zere of not only his magic, but his very life force. In a last attempt to save himself, Zere siphered his energies into Kai, trapping himself inside Kai's brain. Kai was not even aware.

Zere watched Kai's actions, lived Kai's life. He was like a backseat passenger, unable to take action, only capable of watching. It took him nearly a year to escape. When he did, he joined a group known as the World Without Boundaries which wanted to destroy enemy empires and bring the universe under one rule. With his superior skills in magic, Zere was able to advance the work of the WWB, going as far as to destroy a few planets. (See the following topics: http://shatteredplanes.com/forum/index.php?topic=2283.msg23631#msg23631 http://shatteredplanes.com/forum/index.php?topic=2266.msg23502#msg23502
http://shatteredplanes.com/forum/index.php?topic=2194.msg22625#msg22625 )

When Zere got intel that his father, who he long believed to be dead, was still alive and hiding out on Elemora, Zere ordered an attack on the planet, a search for his father, against WWB orders. He would have received disciplinary action had he not entered a hyperspace window, chasing his father... What happened to him after that? We don't really know...

What we do know is that just recently, a figure who looked like him, under some sort of trance, was fighting at the GOL Spacestation. Soon afterwards, he was freed from this trance. Unsure of what happened to him over the last few months, he returned to Ground Island... And what awaits now? Who knows.

He hasn't been amongst his Anrufe brothers and sisters in about a year. Now, he's back.

Weapons: None are needed.
Magic Level: 4.
Appearance:

Okay, I don't need something like that, I just need something, no matter how detailed it may be, to work with. A character.

Name: Ra' Kath/Dr. Keith Yuto
Age: 100
Race: Human/Abomination
Alliance: Ferrarian Empire - Founder.
Biography: Originally known as Dr. Keith Yuto, this man was driven insane by the loss of his wife, Michelle, who was kiled by an explosion that was caused by the Doctor. In this fit of madness the Doctor made a pact with a demon, that he would give it his only son for the power to bring his wife back from the dead. That was a very bad idea. He brought both his wife's body and child into the basement of his home. After the roer rites and assages were all said and done the demon attempted to possess the child but found that it's spirit was too strong. The child, though only five, was strong enough to take control of the demon and use it's power as his own, though in the process he lost all memories of his family and now shares a concious with the creature. The doctor, on the other hand, ended up the worse for wear. The power he was given corrupted him, he become a freak, an abomination. But, despite his appearance the Doctor continued on with his plan and proceeded to bring his wife back from the dead. The spell, though successful, backfired when she looked at his face. What she saw there was so frightening that her heart actually stopped, this caused the Doctor to go truly insane. He turned to face his son and unleashed a barrage of fire in an attempt to kill him. The son countered with a 6' wall of ice and then sent it shooting forwards at the speed of a bullet towards his father, who dodged the wall and rushed the child, his hands having become claws. The child flew upwards and out of the basement and house, leaving the now deformed and mad scientist/sorcerer to mourn the loss of his wife. The doctor took on the identity of Ra' Kath and proceeded to do what most insane scientists do in their spare time. He founded an empire on the jungle planet of Ferrari and made it's inhabitants his persoanl army. Of course.
Weapons: None
Equipment: none
Magic Level: 5
Appearance: His head resembles that of an octopus albeit more tentacles and with glowing red eyes and green skin and is normally kept hidden underneath the hood of his robe except for when he wishes to intimidate his enemies with his appearance, which can cause some lesser souls to go insane themselves, he has wings on his back but they are mostly for show seeing as he can fly without them and usually levitates more often than he walks, they too are kept hidden underneath his robe. His hands and feet are clawed and he is covered head to toe in a series of strange circular tattoos.

He's uh...he's evolved quite a  bit from his inception.

Aight, then. Here we go.

Lesson #1: Accepting the ideas of magic, getting used to the basics.

So, the biggest problems that newcomers have to the RP is getting accustomed to the magic. I think this is mainly because they don't know how magic works. They want a straight-fire answer on how to RP with magic. The answer? There is no answer. There are so many different ways to do this that it's not even funny.

For humans, like this character, magic generally flows through the body freely, and is produced through intense will, concentration, and "oneness" with the universe. Cliche? Yes. But when applied to a battle, it makes for fucking awesomeness. But then, you may ask, how is magic produced in the bodies of some other races?

Relorians have "Weaves" which basically work the same as humans, only on a more spiritual level. Sages have an actual physical organ in their body called a soul which produces magic. It's different for every race. What matters is how that magic is used.

You have to open yourself up to the possibilities of magic, to the fact that it exists in the RP. You have to let your creative juices flow in you, and throw logic out when you're fighting. That's the only way you'll ever win, much less survive. You have to let yourself get used to magic.

You don't really have as much of a problem with that, but still, I want to do a basic exercise with you... I want to "attack" your character and see how you react, to get the full sense of what I'm working with and what level you are preforming at. Okay, then. Here we go....
-----------
Setting: Era Valley (meadow with a lot of grass and hills that spans for miles, basically empty)
Setup: Ra-Kath and Zere are in combat.
IC:

Zere stared his opponent right in the... Well, he didn't exactly have eyes, it seemed, but he still wore some sort of robe. The man was quite the... Interesting character... And Zere had to kill him! He just had to end the life of this man right before him now!

The maniac pranced across the battlefield, towards Ra-Kath, who was only a few feet away. A wild smile was painted across Zere's face as he shook his head at the good doctor.

"My, my, my. You had to go and get yourself killed. Oh, well. I was bored anyway. You're quite entertaining."

He outstretched his hand, the skin upon it rotting, his nails long like talons. Each nail became coated in fire, its hue black as night, ever so obvious in the bright day that they were currently fighting in. Inside the black flames, one would see small, green circles made of some energy, swirling around in the small little flames.

Zere held his hand up and threw the flames like baseballs at Ra-Kath.

Ra' Kath stared at the apparently rotting man as he shot some freaky fire balls at him from his nails. He jumped-strafed (remember locking on and jumping to the side in Ocarina?) to the left seeming to float, as a man sized portal opened beside him. It would encompass the fireballs and whisk them off to another planet.

Aight, aight, aight. Stop.

You're comfortable with magic, to an extent, your first problem seems to be the creative flow part. Honestly, dodging and creating a portal? That's a pretty lame reaction. Let me tell you why...

1. I could easily just redirect the course of my fireballs, through magic. Change their direction.

2. By creating a portal, you left yourself open for attack. I could have used this portal in one of two ways...

A. Absorb the energy of the portal itself and create an explosion. Since the portal is next to you, you'd be within range of an explosion. This portal would help fuel such an explosion, combined with the fireballs. It could have killed you.

B. What was the fire? As you said, it was "funky". It's actually Black Sealing Fire. Normal water does not put it out, and it absorbs everything it touches and seals it within it's flames, ciphering some of the power from what it seals to further fuel it. It would have, if left untouched, naturally reacted by eating your portal apart, making it stronger, then would have come after you again, only stronger.

So, what should you have done, and how should you know how to react?

1. Notice the enemy's attack in detail. You had no idea what my fire was, that's understandable. Most of the time you won't understand your enemy's attacks at first glance. You'll have no idea what the attack does. You still have to react. Don't just assume it's regular fire, assume it's NOT regular fire, and prepare accordingly.

2. Form a strategy. Dodging only works for so long. You have to come up with a strategy in your head that will allow you to pick apart what the enemy is doing, and how you should react. Try, if possible, to use the enemy's attack against them. Maybe instead of making a portal to another planet, you should have made a portal that outputted right behind your enemy.

3. Put your strategy into motion. Attack your opponent.

4. Back your opponent into a corner. If you had outputted those fireballs right behind Zere, you should also cast a spell that makes it harder for him to dodge. Maybe surround him in portals so it is impossible for him to dodge the fireballs. Sometimes this can not be done in one post, but that's better. Once you have an opponent in a corner, you only need to apply a little more force.

5. Show no mercy. Attack your opponent and bring him down once you've got him trapped.

Okay, so, that's all a lot easier said than done. Now, getting your creative juices flowing is our next step. We need to get you thinking weird. SO, this is my next exercise for you. I need you to look at the following pictures and develop a reply to my attack below based off those pictures. Your attack should involve those four pictures somehow, in a creative way.

---

The five flames of black fire reacted by coming together, just before reaching the portal, and combining. The wind in the area suddenly started to pick up as the black fires began to swirl... Into a black fire vortex. The massive tornado quickly came to form, the black fire still with green streaks inside it as the vortex changed direction, now heading towards Ra-Kath again.

Behind Ra-Kath, small portals appeared which were slowly locking onto his magic like a honing device. Where he would go, so too would they.

Ra' Kath's form shook as nineteen identical Ra' Kath's suddenly appeared area each of them spread yards apart form the others, all of them seemingly radiating the same magical energies as Ra' Kath. Two of them were on either side of Zere, just standing there looking at him. They barraged his mind with weird images: Cyclops, basebals, horseshoes, just aweird jumble of confusing things. Large clear balls began appearing and launching themselves at the vortex. Each one was made of pure Order and, as it absorbed them, would slow the fire down to the point it could not move.

That's all I can think of but at least it's three out of four, right?

Hm... Better.

Now, I want you to read over this spellbook. Then, using the template provided, create ten new spells.

Aight, sorry Majora, but you're gonna have to take the Placement test now. I think your skills have improved greatly already.
