Alright, I'd like to start off by welcoming you to the class. This class works via one-on-one instructing, you and me in this topic. This class is designed to teach you battle according to the ways of this roleplay, Shattered Planes. I've read your placement post already, and I sort of know what your skill level is, but I would like to see your reaction to a basic introductory test. Basically, I need to see what we need to work on with you.

First off, I need a character from you, something to work with. The character should be the captain of a ship. The biography does not need to be too long, and the character does not need too much detail, we just need a character to work with throughout your first lesson.

Template is as follows:

Name:
Age:
Gender:
Faction:
Biography:
Personality:
Appearance:

Excellent. Now, we're gonna start with the most common type of battle used here on SP. When creating the SLERP course, one question I often asked myself is if this course should be included or not, and I decided that it should be. Yes, we teach battle as it works on Shattered Planes, but that's because most, if not all, of those enrolled in SLERP RP on SP. However; the content from this and all the other courses can be taken off board, and even out of roleplaying, because this class can give you a better sense of conflict and resolving it.

As I'm sure you know, in stories and books, you as the writer tend to not take the easy way out of a conflict, but make things go from bad to worse for your character, then reveal a solution the readers never thought of, all without actually cheating the readers. We apply a similar concept in battle, only instead of trying to advance the conflict for our character, we try to advance the conflict for our opponent's character, all without godmoding or taking control of the other character, by controlling our own character's words and actions.

So, we will start with one of the more common types of fights here, Magic vs. Magic.

Now, you've got a character. We're going to advance things a little now, and actually get to the battling part of things. You're likely wondering a billion questions. How does magic work here? What should you do? What are "the rules"?

I want you to read over the Beginner Combat Class's lesson one.

Lesson #1: Accepting the ideas of magic, getting used to the basics.

So, the biggest problems that newcomers have to the RP is getting accustomed to the magic. I think this is mainly because they don't know how magic works. They want a straight-fire answer on how to RP with magic. The answer? There is no answer. There are so many different ways to do this that it's not even funny.

For humans, magic generally flows through the body freely, and is produced through intense will, concentration, and "oneness" with the universe. Cliche? Yes. But when applied to a battle, it makes for fucking awesomeness. But then, you may ask, how is magic produced in the bodies of some other races?

Relorians have "Weaves" which basically work the same as humans, only on a more spiritual level. Sages have an actual physical organ in their body called a soul which produces magic. It's different for every race. What matters is how that magic is used.

You have to open yourself up to the possibilities of magic, to the fact that it exists in the RP. You have to let your creative juices flow in you, and throw logic out when you're fighting. That's the only way you'll ever win, much less survive. You have to let yourself get used to magic.

---

Now, while that is true, this intermediate course will deal with taking the basic sense of battle and applying more strategy to it. I'm going to give you a test which I start all my combat classes with.

Setting: Era Valley (meadow with a lot of grass and hills that spans for miles, basically empty)
Setup: Okona and Zere are in combat.
IC:

Finally, Zere had his victim. As he and Okana danced around each other, they could see the fierceness in each other's eyes. A battle was about to begin. This game of cat and mouse was about to be over. Zere was going to tear this man apart.

The maniac pranced across the battlefield, towards Okana, who was only a few feet away. A wild smile was painted across Zere's face as his hands were stretched wide, like he was about to give the man a giant bear hug. He had been waiting for this! Finally, his feast!

"My, my, my. You had to go and get yourself killed. Oh, well. I was bored anyway. You're quite entertaining."

He clenched his fist, the skin upon his hands rotting, his nails long like talons. Each nail became coated in fire, its hue black as night, ever so obvious in the bright day that they were currently fighting in. Inside the black flames, one would see small, green circles made of some energy, swirling around in the small little flames.

Zere held his hand up and threw the flames like baseballs at Okana.

Okona didn't have time for this, getting aught up with maniacs was bad for business and avoiding the authorities. However, he still grinned because this fight was at the very least amusing.

With a half-sarcastic grin, Okona chanted as he drew a number of inscribed throwing spikes. With these in hand Okona dodged swiftly to the side of the fireballs, with finesse throwing the spikes into the center of each of them, hitting the green circles of energy.

Okona chuckled threw his chant as the spiked hit the fireballs, it felt as if the spikes were eating the energy of the flames themselves, encroaching them. The fire dissipated and the spikes fell mutely to the grassy ground. However, his chanting did not end as his feet struck the ground in a dead sprint. Okona appeared to run to the side of where Zere was, as two balls of strange mist-like black energy formed in his hand.

In a ephemeral moment, the two balls of black energy fell like sludge from his hands and entered the grassy ground disappearing from sight.

As Okona drew his pistol, firing two quick shots at Zere. Okona's arms recoiled with each shot, knocking him off balance. Oknona rolled with the fall, landing on his feet in a crouching position.

Truthfully, you did better than most people would on their first try. The problem is, if this was cannon to a real RP and not a lesson, I'd easily have just assured my victory, because you left yourself way too open. Let me demonstrate:

IC - The moment the spikes hit the green circle in the middle of the fire, any hope Okana had of victory was lost. The green circles were seals. Anything the fire hit would be sealed, locked away inside the green circle for all of eternity. And, they were. The spikes were easily absorbed before they had time to even eat half of the fire that had surrounded them.

The fireballs only got bigger at this, and as if they could smell the source of the spikes they had just devoured, they changed course without loosing velocity, now heading directly towards Okana... Who was heading towards Zere!

Okana held out his hands towards the bullets, which were speeding at him faster than any human would ever be able to react. Zere, however, was not human. He quickly formed a portal in front of the path of the bullets. The other end of the portal opened up behind Okana, and the bullets went through.

Even if Okana could dodge the bullets, he had a much bigger problem on his hand now. The fire was still headed directly towards him, and the grass under Okana was starting to turn into a white hue.

Interesting, I take note of that.

IC - Okona disappeared from sight is a flash of purple light as one of the masses of inky Black taking his place. His entire spiritual and magical wave length changed and this inky black mass took on his previous wave length.

The energy mass being struck by the bullets shook and rippled like a body of water being hit by a skipping stone. Only then, did the inky black mass of energy lurch forward like a snake to its prey at Zere. With Okona's previous wave length, the fire was sure to follow.

So then, Where was Okona? Simple, he was in the second mass of inky black energy, chanting lightly as the energy swirled and danced deep under the ground. Another pair of inky black masses went from the one that contained Okona, and rushed at Zere from underneath his feet.

The one that had taken Okona's place appeared to burst and bubble, and in a moment exploded in a fury of acidic black flames. The other two grasped at Zere's feet, as if trying to hold him in place with their acidic inky black energy hands. Okona himself remained moving in dance like and unpredictable motions under the ground held in a ethereal state within a inky black mass of energy.

Sorry been incredibly busy lately. This was good. I do think you're pretty much at an advanced level already considering you beat me before, so I'm gonna test you. Give me a few days to make up a test.
