I was against the SOPA and PIPA because it was all about political control, plain and simple. However, I don't approve of piracy, and megaupload getting busted was how things should be. I was with you against SOPA, but from now on I don't agree.

Piracy is wrong, but we need to readdress the issues and why millions partake in it. There's something wrong with local and global copyright laws, they are based on an outdated business model and are no longer used to protect innovation, but to encourage greed. As such, we need copyright reform.

Can't do some of that. If there's a movie in 2nd run I want to see, waiting means giving up on it. As much as i agree with you K2, the reason people are pirating is the same reason early America turned to slavery: free is more desirable than paying, even if it's petty change. With internet based sale to begin with, I'm not sure there is a way to fight it without bashing the first amendment.

If an artist finds their song for pirated download and pulls some strings to get the site taken down corporately, don't complain.

I am unsure if I should assume you are trolling and report that post as such, or accept you honestly believe what you have just stated and gaze in awe at such disrepesectful stupidity. Either way, the creative forces behind most media doesn`t see must anyway. When possible I like to keep my money out of corporate hands, so hypthetically if I just happened to pirate, its because of poltical reasons and in a way its a new kind of actvisism against corporate greed.

Nik, implying that the first amendment is less important than people with money making more money is ridiculous. Record companies take advantage of copyright laws which were created to protect initiative and creativity, and they push those laws, abusing them, not to protect creativity, but to make more money off some kid who just wanted to download the song for his iPod. Internet piracy is nothing like slavery, slavery was wrong because it was inhumane, not because it was a source of labor.

It is though. It is founded on the same motive: greed. In most cases even someone who can afford songs will choose to download a pirated song. If you're in the store, and you see a piece of candy for free, and a piece of candy for 5 cents, which will you go with? Now I'll admit that the metaphor I used has a lot more gravity than I meant for it, but the point's still accurate (blame it on APUSH homework).

Flaming aside, keeping money out of corporate hands also keeps money out of creative hands. ITunes doesn't get to just keep all the money they make, they have to pay artists and record companies. It's not right to think that it's your right to own things you didn't pay for. If you get offended that a site for illegal downloads was taken down then you have no concern ever for what happens to the artist.

The first amendment is far more important than stopping piracy, however that doesn't mean that piracy is right. Like I said, if a pirated song is found and next thing you know the site is gone, don't complain. Don't hate on the artist, just find a new site to get your illegal downloads.

Megaupload had a hell of alot more than illegal movies and shit. I personally know about 2 large online communities that were drastically affected by MU's shutdown.

megaupload had a lot more on it than pirated matrial. legit bussinessses who cannot afford the upkeep of other sites used it for backing up their data. When you get an ILLIGAL SEARCH AND SEIZURE don`t complain because you like that sort of thing. Fact of the matter is, no, the music industutry is not losing money and biggest piraters of music are also the biggest buyers of music. Corporate doesn`t even have their fact strait. However, with the way the world is now, there are ways to sell and spread your music withoutva lable or a company behind you. tough cookies for capitalistic idiots.

I did not know that. I was thinking it was something like MP3 Bee that was devoted to illegal downloads, but if that's just a small part in the background then they should have found some other solution instead of removing it.

I think everyone is forgetting something major. Piracy isn't simply downloading copies of stuff. It's downloading without the intent to buy it later. I pirate games I like to see if it will run. If it runs, I will save up my money and buy it. Downloading to see if you like it before you buy isn't bad at all, but downloading without intent to buy at all is akin to stealing.

ALSO, the DMCA has a clause regarding keeping a single digital copy on hand for 'archival purposes.' Therefore, as long as you legally own a copy, be it physical or digital, it is fully legal for you to download and keep one more copy.
