A Minor Error
« on: September 17, 2012, 02:19:23 AM »
Hist hit his head into the pilot terminal, sobbing in frustration. He wasn't great at navigation, and once again he had no idea where he was. The shuttle had just dropped out of FTL, and with only a very small reactor, it would be another week before it could make another jump.

There didn't even seem to be an actual planet here, Hist felt as if he deserved this penance for how worthless he considered himself. Wallowing in self-deprecation, Hist scanned the system.

He would find, just in eye's shot distance, a massive ship graveyard, and as such his scanner would likely be going crazy at the mass amounts of debris, as if he were entering some sort of asteroid field. One would probably typically account this for glitch, but all one would truly need to do is look outside -- assuming it had any kind of clear force field or window of some sorts to look through -- and see the sight before them, literally hundreds of abandoned ships floating, as well as various other kinds of debris.

Depending on who you asked, you might say Hist was either in luck or out of it. To find some sort of refuge in the wake of his situation could be considered a blessing. However; he had yet to enter and find that, while there was refuge to be found for those who needed it, there was also danger.

Hist tilted his head as he looked over his scanners wonky readings. The scanner itself wasn't that high grade, the the details were bare at the best of times. However, he did lower the blinder sheet. Allowing him to see the abandoned ships, thus Hist in desperation headed for one that seemed to have some lights on. For all he knew he was hallucinating.

The cheap hunk of metal called a shuttle moved slowly towards its new destination.

Among the wreckage, a HUGE structure would appear, shifting from behind a few collided titans. This object would be notably different: It was moving. Fast. What was it? A Levithan. Giovanni. And it was coming straight towards Hist, ready to feed on the newcomer. Or destroy it. Whichever came first.

A large portal would appear in the path between the fighter and the ship it was headed towards.

The shuttle had no weapon systems, and its maneuvering thrusters were a bit slow. Hist has no ability to avoid the Levithan or the portal. The shuttle thus enter the portal, as Hist held his face in his hands in shameful acceptance of death. The failure to prove himself in the wars, the failure to stand up for himself when accused of something he didn't do. The self hatred and shame rippled through his very essence, as Hist prepared to die the death he felt he deserved.

With a huge screech, there was a shaking throughout a small complex somewhere among the shipyard. Hist and his fighter had just arrived, through the portal, into a docking bay, where a hard landing had just been preformed. Locking a fighter when it had velocity to it was hard to do, especially with no approach, but it was possible -- sort of like a car slamming on breaks.

Of course, the fighter would probably, given its condition, not take the hard landing well, but it was nothing that couldn't be repaired.

A man dressed in a military uniform, standard cammo, and holding some sort of gun in his hand, knocked on the fighter before backing up and joining his small team of about five others. They cautiously watched to see what would emerge from the fighter. Or who. They may have saved it from the Levithan, but that didn't mean they trusted it.

The shuttle cracked under the stress of a sudden stop, the electrical circuits fried, the computer system shock loose as all of the delicate parts crunched against their encasement. Worst of all the Helium2 Reactor's radiation shielding seared off. Leaking offensives radiation and neutrinos. The ship was badly damaged as it was, and this stop might have totaled it.

Hist himself flew out the front, without power to maintain shielding. The front visual window had nothing to prevent himself from ejecting due to basic physics. Slamming against the wall, Hist coughed up a greenish, acid blood that burned at his cloths. As he lowered his head in acceptance of death. However, due to being a Wyvern, this didn't actually hurt him that badly, just enough to need a couple days of rest.

Hist didn't even know where he was, and before he could even try to find out. He passed out.

Luckily for everyone, a bit of radiation was nothing the filters couldn't take care of, but the shuttle was obviously a danger, and it was unlikely to be recoverable. It was immediately ejected back into the vacuum of space, with the gravity dampening field that was keeping them all in place fluctuating only for the shuttle, giving it a nice kick in the ass.

"Get him a room," the captain ordered, glaring at the passed out visitor, "But make sure he doesn't have any weapons on him first. And keep a close guard on him at all times. I want an AM Field up as well. Just to be careful."

Hist had just arrived in the heart of one of the Anrufe's most important outposts.

The shuttle had finally had it, the force of the ejection torn to pieces, as the many shards of metal were released into the void of space.

Hist didn't have any weapons, considering he was framed for something bad enough to warrant exile... he wasn't trusted with any. His cloths were simple and torn, which would reveal easily the so much nothing he had to his name. This close though, the guards would notice that while everything else was remarkably humanoid, Hist's eyes were scaly and reptilian.

In his mind's eye, Hist dreamed in the twilight of his unconscious of the ocean waves beating against the sand. Of the acrid and soot smell of so much blood spilled, only to be push against the vast ocean. All his tribe territory lost. Looking into the eyes of the woman he loved... he knocked her out, and took flight with her in his talons. It would be a long flight, and she would never forgive him for not dying with his tribe, like a Wyvern should.

"Sir, the unidentified man from the shuttle appears to be fine," a doctor informed the outpost's leader as she timidly stood in his office. The leader, who was having a cup of tea, nodded his head. "Anything else?"

"No, sir. The man is of an unknown race that we have not yet encountered. He appears mostly humanoid."

"Right," the leader said, setting his cup down on his desk and standing from his chair, "Let me know the moment he wakes up."

Light pour around his eyelids, the sleep that had taken him was gone. Sitting up, Hist didn't even try to get to know his surroundings> The man accept the situation with the kind resignation that only someone who lost a their sense of self-worth could. The dream from before, a memory of what was sliced into his being. Trying to keep the images of that face lost to time, fresh in his mind. Thinking, that even death would serve not purpose... seeing her again could only result in rejection.

So, he waited. For whoever his saviors... or merely another predator snapping prey from a rival.  He could not know what their plans for him were. So, he didn't even try. He merely sat up, and sang, a song in that sounded strange and vibrant. Hissing and growls melted in with the lyrics, of a language that only Wyvern's speak. It was merely a way to keep his mind occupied while he waited.

Hist would not likely realize it, but he was being watched through a one-way-window. In the adjacent room, a crew of medics had been monitoring him. When he awoke, the Chief Medic immediately stood up and went off to alert the Outpost Leader. It was likely that the Outpost Leader would want to speak to Hist himself -- that is, if Hist could even speak -- and even if he could, who was to say that they would know a common language?

The Outpost Leader, a man named Samuel, was watching the Levithan devour his meal of the day. From his office, he had a clear view through his window of many of the ruined ships floating around the small station the Anrufe inhabited. Of course, it wasn't really a WINDOW that Samuel was looking out of. It was actually a shield that kept air in and gave the illusion of a window. Still, it allowed Samuel quite the view during the days.

When the Chef Medic knocked on Samuel's office door, Samuel shouted out, "Come in."

Turning to meet the Chief Medic, Samuel stood and watched him salute. Formalities. Really, Samuel had no need for them, but it was Anrufe policy. Discipline, they said. A waste of time, he didn't dare say. Nodding his head at the Chief Medic, he awaited the report on the status of the guest. That was the only thing the Chief Medic could want. The medics didn't see much action on the outpost, after all.

"At ease," Samuel said firmly.

"Sir," the Chief Medic replied, standing at ease, "He's awake."

"Right," Samuel replied.

Fifteen minutes later, Samuel, now suited up in Aria Class Armor, entered Hist's room, glaring at him. How did he need to go about this situation? Determining which common language the two had, if any, would work best. He thought about his options. Start with English. A lot of empires used English to communicate with each other, because the Alliance had used English. Failing that, try Nyx or Guardian or Old Sage or some other language.

"Can you understand me?" he asked, "Cunehye meioundaratu? Ohoro dopostnaho?"

Having to adjust to the Marid Collective's political dominance after the Stasis was distubed, had benefits. For one, for trading purposes English was a thoroughly taught  language. While like most Wyverns, the Gs were growled, and the Ss had a slight hiss, and Ts more sharp than needed, he did know English.

"With Great fortune, yes  I can understand you." the syntax and word choice, was the result of the collective teaching English for formality and business. Even if Hist tried, he could only sound polite in English.

"Good," Samuel replied, glancing at the man and trying to distinguish which race he might be from, "Your shuttle was, unfortunately, destroyed beyond repair. Do you have a home? We can supply you with adequate transport there. If not, you will be dropped off at a planet of our choosing."

Home... Home no longer existed. Even before the Collective, Hist had lost his first home the moment his Tribe was wiped out. He lost his second home then as well. If if he didn't know, her heart was lost to him. With nothing, and no desire for anything where in the universe could Hist want to go? Hell, he be willing to die for almost anything. However, just like when his tribe was wiped out... the instinct for self-preservation was too strong for any thought of self-annihilation. The best he could hope for, to find a true death. A way to avoid even the after life.

Hist opened his eyes, the red glow in the light would reveal the serpentine slits of his eyes. He considered their kind offer... but he didn't like the idea of just being dropped over on some random planet. Hist would rather... what? Without caring to consider what he wanted anymore, Hist wasn't sure what he would prefer. So, why not... why not, the power to open portals, maybe they didn't have it, but maybe, with power like that. They had a way Hist could find his True Death.

"While, I no longer have a home... I'd rather pledge my life to the service of those who saved my life. Rather than, ask for ever more generosity" The tone was accented, and unnatural, while he was telling the truth about not wanting more help, he didn't feel like deserved any help. However, the details of why he wanted to pledge his service, were his alone. So, a little bit of white lying hurt no one. Yet... why would that accept him? May as well try.

"Yeah?" Samuel replied, raising his eyebrow. "I can ship you off to one of our training camps. If you survive, you'll be granted status as a Level Four soldier. There's a war on the horizon, and we need every new warrior we can get on the battlefield. How's that sound, then?"

If he survived? Hist liked the sound of that. With even their training a hinted danger... his hope may not be unfounded. Of all the times to finally be in a chain of fortune, when it was too late to want life... the irony amused him slightly. Hist smiled lightly, and replied. "Please enroll me as soon as is convenient for you. I will serve faithfully."

"Right, we'll teleport you n-"

Samuel paused, and seemed, after a moment, to actually have shock upon his face. He had just received a message sent through his Comm Unit. Citadel had been destroyed. How was that even possible? And by who? It seemed that the Anrufe was at war. Things had just changed drastically.

"Change in plans," he said now, "Seems our main training outpost was just destroyed. Looks like that war I was talking about came faster than I thought it would. Can you stand?"

"A second attack is under way," Samuel replied, "Intel is pouring in. Looks like several parties are allying for the purpose of bringing our organization down. We are an organization known as the Anrufe, and we've made a lot of enemies out there, so it's no surprise. We could use you in the fight, if you're up to it. I assume you do know how to fight... Nearly lost in memories, Hist heard the hiss of Burning stone, as the acid blood of his dead enemy dripped through his jaws. The screams and wails rings in his ears across time. For someone who fled when all was lost, he had been one of the strongest. Maybe that is why her eyes glared in a look of betrayal. No matter, he still chased after her heart, when the Tribes till fought, and the Marid were young.

Through the sheen of memories, Hist nodded briskly, "Understood, I can fight for Anrufe."

"Right. Best of luck to you, then. It has been a pleasure meeting you. If anyone asks, tell them Samuel of the Sovereign outpost sends you."

Before Hist could respond, he would find himself in the snowy cold of Walape.
